I am currently currently the Thomas K. Hepler Early Career Professor in Chemical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University and hold courtesy appointments in the Chemistry Department and the Materials Science and Engineering Department. I received my Diploma in Polymer and Colloidal Chemistry from the University of Bayreuth in 2009 (Germany), before working for Prof. Alexander Böker at the DWI Leibinz Insitute for Interactive Materials at the RWTH Aachen (Germany). My thesis was on the influence of electric fields on block copolymer mesophases. After graduating with summa cum laude and receiving the Borcher’s medal in recognition of an outstanding dissertation, the late Edward J. Kramer invited me to work at in the Materials Department at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) in collaboration with Craig J. Hawker. As an Alexander von Humboldt Feodor Lynen Postdoctoral Fellow, we worked on light-mediated surface-induced polymerization techniques as a new route towards chemically patterned surfaces, which allowed me to expand my skillset towards chemical engineering and synthetic polymer chemistry.
