SPSY 500: Professional Issues in School Psychology
SPSY 500 is a professional survey course. Major goals include acquainting students with the kinds of problems or concerns with which school psychologists typically work, the variety of methods they employ in dealing with problems and concerns, the social systems in which these endeavors occur, professional issues that shape and characterize the profession, and professional ethics and codes of conduct. Professional development and career development issues will also be addressed.
SPSY 561: Consultation in Educational Settings
The primary purpose of this course is to teach students how to provide assessment and intervention services through a consultative model of service delivery. Students will achieve proficiency in implementing a behavioral consultation model and become familiar with other consultative models for providing services to youth and families. In addition, students will have the opportunity to develop skills related to the provision of professional development training for teachers. Finally, students will learn about consulting with systems and have the opportunity to develop a universal program and plan for implementation in a school setting.
SPLED 409C: Math for Special Education Populations
Research-based assessment, instruction, and intervention strategies for teaching mathematics skills to students with special needs will be described in this course. Students will identify (a) the risk factors associated with mathematics disabilities, (b) effective prevention and remediation models of mathematics disabilities, (c) characteristics of scientifically-based instruction in content-area skills (e.g., counting, addition, fractions, problem solving, geometry) for K-12 students with disabilities, and (d) how to effectively provide and assess the effects of such instruction in general and special education classrooms.
