Bust Mode clinches first IM Softball playoff birth with decisive win

It was only the second game of the season for PFS’s own Bust Mode IM softball team but it appeared that the team was in midseason form. The fingerprint of Bust Mode softball over the past two years has been defined by slow starts but that was not the case in this one. The balls were flying around the park early and often.

Bust Mode started the game in the early innings with a 4-0 lead which was then squelched over the course of a couple innings after the opposition handed the team a 5-4 deficit going into the bottom half of the 5th.

Last week, runs came in bunches for the Bust Mode squad and it was more of the same this time. After almost batting around through the 14-man batting lineup, Bust Mode took a commanding 16-5 lead and never looked back. The final score was 16-9 and PFS are in the driver’s seat with one left to play in the hunt for an IM softball title.

PFS rallies to claim first IM softball win in club history

After a 2017 season that saw great improvement over the course of the month-long IM softball schedule but no victories, Bust Mode, the PFS intramural softball team, had the bats come alive late in the inaugural game of the IM Sports season and brought home the club’s first ever IM softball win in an 8-6 victory.

Through 5.5 innings, the game was 3-2 pitchers’ duel, uncustomary for slow-pitch softball. Bust Mode’s hitters struggled to get their timing down, resulting in either lazy grounders or popups.

It all changed in the bottom of the 6th. Bust Mode put 6 on the board with a good mix of power shots (two homers, back-to-back) and solid base hits to put them up 8-3 heading into the final inning. After two quick outs in the 7th, the opponents put up a fight by plating 3, but ultimately left the bases loaded on a weak ground out to the shortstop.

Bust Mode’s next game is at 7:30pm on Thursday, September 13 at the Intramural Fields.

Opening PFS IM Softball game is at 7:30pm tonight

The PFS intramural softball team, named “Bust Mode”, will play its opening game tonight at 7:30pm at the Intramural Fields.

Please be at the fields by 7:00pm to ensure that the team has a full complement of players for the game.

You can still sign up to be on the PFS softball team. Go to Penn State’s IM Sports website, find “Softball”, click “Open”, then find the team “Bust Mode.” Complete the online quiz when prompted. Once you get a 100% on the quiz, our captain will confirm your request to join the team.

Here are some things to remember to bring with you to IM softball games:

– Your PSU ID
– White and colored shirts with a number on the back (for our colored shirts, PFS traditionally uses jerseys from professional sports teams)
– Non-metal cleats (the grass at the IM Fields gets very slippery)
– A baseball/softball glove
