Project on Leading with Ethics

Use the characterization of Leading with Ethics provided in this module to guide some creative thinking about ethical leadership. Invent some fictional leadership context, think about what would be required of an ethical leader in that context, and then write a job ad and a list of interview questions to ask applicants for the position. Be sure to describe the context in enough detail to make the project interesting. Include things like:

  • The nature and aims of the organization (Is it a business, a non-profit, a government agency, a student organization, etc.? Does it provide goods or services, training or education; does it regulate some industry, lobby for policies, compete in some league, etc.?)
  • The structure of the organization (Is there a single owner, president, CEO, director, or supreme commander? (How) is the power and the responsibility for decisions divided?)
  • The specific challenges that will face the person hired into the position (Is there a history of factions within, or are there other challenges in the culture of the organization? Does it operate within or in connection to an industry or a profession where there are particular incentives to turn a blind eye to ethical concerns?)
  • The specific qualifications and characteristics you expect the person to have, and the specific questions that you think will allow you to determine whether or not someone is right for the job.
