Ethics Sensitivity Exercise Follow-Up

The point of this follow up is to have you take your own initial read of the situation and think about how closely it matches some examples of other possible ways of reading it.

Read through each of the alternatives carefully, then click on the one that you think most closely resembles your own.

A. I don’t see what the big deal is. This is the kind of thing that happens all the time. There isn’t really anything you can do about it, except maybe never go anywhere where someone might take a picture of you, which means never go anywhere; or never share any of your pictures, which would be really hard. What Alan did is not really a big deal, and Melissa and Jessica shouldn’t really have any problems with it.

B. Melissa should be upset, because she trusted Alan not to do that. We all know that there are settings on social media sites for a reason, and that our friends expect us to respect their decisions concerning how to share their photos. When Alan took the photo, altered it, and then posted it on his page, he kind of broke a promise to Melissa. This could also put Melissa in a bad situation. If Alan made fun of Jessica, or did something that hurt her feelings, Jessica might think that Melissa was in on it.

C. Jessica should be upset, because Melissa and Alan are sharing photos of her, and Alan is making fun of her. It’s unlikely that either Melissa or Alan asked Jessica’s permission to publish a photo of her on the web. Her right to privacy was violated, so she should be upset. Alan is also making fun of her, which may hurt her feelings, and may lead other people to join in and make even more fun of her.

After you have chosen the response that most resembles your own, and you have thought about the follow-up questions and looked over the other responses, feel free to comment below on the process. Did the questions get you to see the situation differently? Is there anything important about the situation that you think has been left out?
