Ethical Motivation

The third and final element of moral literacy is the aspect that is key for translating our perceptiveness and our critical decision-making into actions. It is one thing to decide what should be done, and another thing to be personally motivated to do it. If our motivations for acting aren’t in line with what we decide it is best to do, or if they aren’t strong enough to withstand outside pressures that suggest other courses of action to us, we won’t make consistently good use of the conclusions we draw by making use of the other elements of moral literacy.

Ethical Motivation involves several components that can help us connect our feelings and our thoughts with our actions:

  1. Moral Purpose
  2. Moral Courage
  3. Moral Hope
