Welcome to PHYS 525 Fall 2018 Edition
Welcome to PHYS 525 (Fall 2018 Edition).
We will start our meetings on Monday, August 20th, at 11:15am in 119 Thomas.
As Galileo said:
“Philosophy is written in this grand book — I mean the universe — which stands continually open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth.”
– The Assayer (1623) by Galileo Galilei
Our goal in this course is to explore and learn the language of the universe, the mathematical tools used in physics to plan experiments, understand their results and predict the outcome of future ones.
During our first meeting I will ask you for take a test to measure your current knowledge of undergraduate mathematical methods. The purpose of the test is to tailor the course to your needs and detect areas that need reinforcement.
Feel free to explore this website. We will put here all public materials for the course and use Canvas to store private information.
