RCL #3 – Responding to Elevator Pitch

The elevator pitch I will talk about is Rohan Roy’s “Climate Change is Real” civic artifact. As Rohan said, the civic artifact is directly telling the audience that climate change is a problem. With Rohan pointing that out, the elevator pitch immediately let us know what the civic artifact is telling us. After giving us an idea of what the civic artifact is trying to tell us, Rohan then transitions into the smaller details, such as the cartoon globe’s displacement on its axis or the depiction of the water dripping, which may indicate the ice caps melting. By doing so, the audience is enabled to to understand the deeper meanings of the civic artifact. For example, by directly showing us that climate change is real, we can look at these hidden meanings and infer that the globe will look like the one depicted if we don’t act on this. One part that Rohan didn’t point out, that another student pointed out, was the fact that there was another part to this civic artifact, being the kickthechange.org. There are many meanings to this that give some uncertainty. Is the kick the change literal in meaning we have to kick climate change out so it’s not there anymore, or is it referring to kicking or starting the change to fight climate change? That would be the only part I would recommend Rohan to add to the pitch.

  1. I enjoyed Rohan’s pitch as well. Like he said in his pitch, the artifact is deceptively simple. The dripping water from the globe could definitely represent melting ice caps. I also found it interesting that the globe looked like a ball and appeared to have a footprint on it, which can connect to the kickthechange.org part and the idea that people should reduce their carbon footprints.

  2. I really liked Rohan’s pitch as well and the simplicity behind his artifact. I also liked the lenses he used to analyze it. I agree he should include the kickthechange.org part to the pitch to deepen and strengthen the message of the civic artifact.

  3. I enjoyed listening to Rohan’s speech as well! I found the artifact to be quite fascinating. I think his focus on literal details in the artifact is what made it more interesting. He focuses on little things such as the water dripping and interpreted them into his own words. I think the addition of kickthechange.org would help strengthen his argument and make it more persuasive.
