Four-panel metamorphosis in ink and color wash, ca. 1800
While undated, this handmade metamorphosis is constructed on a laid Dutch paper of the 18th century. The same paper and watermark is present in some of the architectural drawings of Thomas Jefferson, leading us to give the item a date of ca. 1800. Each of the four panels contains twelve lines of verse narration to accompany the illustrations.
A paper facsimile makes it possible to “play with” this fragile metamorphosis, as the photographs below demonstrate.
