Body Like Back Road – Passion Blog

So, this song is a lot to unpack, and most of you reading have probably already heard it, had it get stuck in your head for an ungodly amount of time and then probably completely forgot about it.

So… Body Like A Back Road is a pretty terrible song (just my opinion), but I’m not just saying that because I hate Sam Hunt’s voice or because it has that insufferable quality about it that takes days to get it out of your ear, I hate it because I sat down and really listened to the lyrics, and they confused me and just made me unhappy overall, mostly because they just reeked of misogyny and just overall “ickiness”.

Let’s just get right into the first verse, “got a girl from the Southside, got braids in her hair. First time I seen her walk by, man I ‘bout fell up out my chair. Had to get her number, it took me like six weeks. Now me and her go way back, like Cadillac seats”. So similarly to Cruise, which I discussed in a previous post, Hunt doesn’t really seem to have much of an opinion regarding this girl’s personality, just her appearance, which is evident with the lyric about him falling out of his chair when she walked by because she was so sexy? And side note, did Hunt ever consider to the possibility that it took him six weeks to gets this girl’s number because she found him creepy and she didn’t want to give it to him but finally gave in? That’s certainly what it sounds like to me but that’s just speculation

Okay so now what I would probably consider the strangest part of the song for reasons I will discuss, the chorus, “body like a back road, drivin’ with my eyes closed, I know every curve like the back of my hand. Doin’ fifteen in a thirty, I ain’t in no hurry, I’ma take it slow just as fast as I can”. So, the girl he’s talking about is sexy and because she’s like a backroad, back roads are sexy? Speaking from experience, I’d like to mention that comparing someone to a backroad is much more of an insult than a compliment. I grew up in Tennessee where the best the backroads got was maybe only three potholes, so in actuality, he is saying that this girl is muddy, bumpy and “potholey”, which is overall just super sweet and something you should definitely say to your girlfriend/boyfriend the next time you see them.

An example of the typical southern backroad

But let’s ignore that and pretend that this is actually a compliment, we’re back on only seeing this girl’s body and that’s all that’s important and all that matters, but I guess at this point none of us should really be surprised.

Okay, onto verse two, “the way she fit in them blue jeans, she don’t need no belt, but I can turn ‘em inside out, I don’t need no help. Got a hips like honey, so thick and so sweet, ain’t no curves like hers on them downtown streets”. So finally we get some sort of an explanation as to why exactly this girl is likened to a “backroad”, it’s because she’s got a big butt and a small waist, so she’s curvy, like a back road. This song just continues to constantly comment on this girl’s body but nothing else, but like I said, are any of us surprised? I for one, am not.

The chorus plays against and then and then we’re onto verse three, “we’re put here in the boondocks with the breeze and the birds, tangled up in the tall grass with my lips on hers, on a highway to heaven, headed south of her smile, get there when we get there, every inch is a mile”. What I’ve gathered from this overall verse, and this song I suppose is that Mr. Sam Hunt is the king of sexual road similes. This verse isn’t particularly misogynistic since there isn’t really any instance of Hunt outwardly forcing us to listen to how hot he thinks this girl is.

The chorus happens again and then the song ends with the chorus again, but slower.

So, this song was just misogynistic in the way that he is quite literally sexually objectifying her, for practically every second of this 2 minute and 45-second monstrosity. Overall I think my biggest issue, however, is that I listened to Body Like a Backroad maybe 8-10 times in order to properly get my thoughts down, so I’m entirely convinced that I will not be able to stop humming it until next year.

Having just come from your post about Cruise, I feel like this song takes it to an entirely different level. Now I’m not a stickler against having mildly sexual lyrics in a song. Sex is a part of life, whatever it happens. However, I also kind of get the “creepy” undertones that you mention throughout the post. I hate country altogether, so rating the song would be pointless on my end, but breakdown of each of his verses was well done.
