Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck – Passion Blog

This post is hard for me because I personally love this song and it is one of the many country songs that I love to just listen to with my windows down on my way to work, but sadly, upon listening to the lyrics a little closer, I conceded that I probably should make a post about Kip Moore’s Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck.

This post will be a little bit different and you can probably already tell since the title of the song is Somethin’ About a Truck, so already from the getgo, the focus of the song doesn’t seem to be a girl, rather a car, which if you remember from one of my previous posts, is another stereotype of “bro-country”. Enough stalling on my part, and let’s get into the song.

The first verse goes “Somethin’ ’bout a truck in a farmers field, a “no trespass” sign, and time to kill, nobody’s gonna get hurt, so what’s the big deal, somethin’ ’bout a truck in a farmer’s field”. Okay, so this song is about a truck in a field! That’s innocent enough, so I’m wondering why this song got roped into the genre of “bro-country” when this guy just seems really happy about his truck.

Time for the second verse then I guess since the first verse was so, normal, I guess, compared to the other songs I usually have to endure, “Somethin bout beer, sittin on ice, after a long hard day, makes it taste just right. On that dropped tailgate, on a summer night. Somethin’ bout beer sittin on ice”. I mean, this guy is just having a good time, he has beer on his tailgate, he’s in a field, he’s just living life to the fullest. Why did I say that this song was iffy again? Onto the third verse, I guess.

The third verse goes “And there’s somethin bout a girl in a red sundress, with an ice-cold beer pressed against her lips, in that farmers field, will make a boy a mess. There’s somethin bout a girl in a red sundress.”. Oh. Here it is. I think my biggest problem when listening to this song overall is that the only thing we know about the girl is that she is wearing a red sundress, however, we know a lot more about the truck, or the beer, or even the damn farmer’s field. For once, I think I’d like to listen to a country song where the description of a girl goes beyond, she has long legs and a nice dress, just once. But I digress and I will now move onto the fourth verse.

This verse goes as follows, “And there’s somethin bout a kiss that’s gonna lead to more, on that dropped tailgate back behind the corn. The most natural thing you’ve ever felt before. There’s somethin bout a kiss that’s gonna lead to more.”. Again, we learn more about the truck than the girl that he’s kissing, but as I said at the beginning of this post, that was something that I was expecting, seeing as how the title of the song was Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck and not “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Girl”, so overall, I’m not too disappointed.

The next part of this song is what I think is the chorus (the set up of this song confuses me a little because it seems as though there are too many verses for the number of time the chorus plays), which goes as follows, “And there’s somethin bout a truck in a field, and a girl in a red sundress with an ice-cold beer to her lips beggin for another kiss, and there’s somethin bout you and me and the birds and the bees, and lord have mercy it’s a beautiful thing. Ain’t nothin bout it luck, there’s somethin bout a truck”. So to the best of my understanding, Kip Moore is giving his truck credit as to why he is getting laid? That’s the best I can interpret from “the birds and the bees” and the “there’s nothing about it luck, there’s somethin’ bout a truck”.

A small side note that I’d like to include in its own little separate paragraph is that another stereotype of “bro-country” is that the male singers often sing about their trucks in a way that implies that they want to have sex with them, and honestly, Kip Moore has sung more lovingly about his truck in this song than he has about the girl that he has supposedly done “something about the birds and the bees” with, so I’ll leave that open to your interpretation.

Now onto what I think is the final verse of this song, “Somethin bout a creek, around 2 a.m., after a few of those beers, you wanna dive on in. You don’t need no clothes, so just hang em on a limb. There’s somethin bout a creek around 2 a.m.”. Now he and this girl are skinny dipping and we all know that skinny dipping tends to lead to “something about the birds and the bees”, and I’d like to note that this time, there is no truck, so that is some progress.

Finally, we close with the chorus? Again, the way this song is set up really confuses me, “And there’s somethin bout a truck in a field, and a girl in a red sundress with an ice-cold beer to her lips, beggin for another kiss. And there’s somethin bout you and me and the birds and the bees, and lord have mercy, it’s a beautiful thing. Ain’t nothin bout it luck, there’s somethin bout a truck. Ain’t nothin bout it luck, there’s somethin bout a truck”. My thoughts about this are the same as before, there are two things he is singing about, and if you asked me which one he wanted to have sex with, I wouldn’t think it was the girl.
