Julian Abele & Horace Trumbauer Architect

Although his name is not mentioned on the blueprints that survived from Horace Trumbauer’s firm, Julian Abele is credited with designing much of Duke University’s west campus. At the time it would have been rare to give such credit to a black architect, but more recent scholars have brought Abele’s contributions to architecture into the spotlight. Credited with designing Page Auditorium, Memorial Chapel, and the Duke Library, Abele helped to create a portion of Duke’s campus recognizable to many students and visitors of Durham.
