This project takes advantage of newer DC zoning laws that allowed unbuildable lots to be purchased and built on once again. Excited by the possibility of providing compact, affordable living spaces in a densely populated area like Washington DC, Richard Ortega, Janet Bloomberg, and their KUBE associates set about designing a modern take on alley neighborhoods. Duvall Court employs an increasingly popular theory of design that favors spaces with multiple functions/purposes to maximize efficiency. The designers also wanted to achieve energy efficiency wherever possible, placing a heavy emphasis on natural light and installing walkable green roofs above each unit.
