I’m going to rescue you…I’m going to pull your ass out of the flame. / Orpheus Polaroid Stories

Orpheus married the love of his life, Eurydice, who soon descended into the underworld. Orpheus ventured after her, Hades telling him that he could lead her out only if Orpheus did not look back at Eurydice on the way. He looked back, losing her for eternity: “she was swept once more to the land of the shadows.” In Polaroid Stories, Orpheus expresses his love for Eurydice in a drunk, ill-behaved manner. Orpheus would still journey to hell to seek out Eurydice and reclaim her, but in Iizuka’s play, Eurydice is trying to escape from him and the world that consumes her. Iizuka creates a powerful and dramatic adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love, while keeping the mythological story alive.
