POSTDOCTORAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Goals of the PPD program are to:

  • Develop skills and acquire tools needed to excel as a scientific professional
  • Provide knowledge regarding rules, ethics, and policies governing research

 

Training (2 Parts):

  1. Online CITI training in RCR – must be completed within 3 weeks of first day of employment at the COM. Multiple language formats are available. (Certificates of completion will be sent to Postdoc office).
    1. RCR Basic course– required for postdocs who have had no prior RCR training: Authorship; collaborative research; conflicts of interest; data management; financial responsibility; mentoring; peer review; plagiarism; human subjects research; research misconduct; animal research
    2. RCR Refresher course– for postdocs who have taken RCR training previously at this or another U.S. institution: Authorship; collaborative research; conflicts of interest; data management; mentoring; peer review; human subjects; animal research; research misconduct
  1. Professional Development Workshop Series: “Lab management and Research Survival Skills”- Postdocs must attend at least 5 workshops. The 1 hour workshops are held monthly, and are intended for a culturally diverse trainee group. Attendance will be recorded, and a certificate provided upon completion. The format is small group discussions between trainees and faculty. Case studies from a research laboratory setting will be selected and presented for discussion each month by the trainees, and will focus on the unique roles of postdocs as laboratory personnel. Participating faculty will include postdoctoral mentors and general research faculty at the College of Medicine. Topics are presented in list below. Additional topics, presented by the faculty, will focus on scientific rigor and reproductability.
