Since her claim to fame with the premier of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kylie Jenner has been a bit… different from her sisters. One could say she’s the ugly duckling of the bunch, but none the less, Kylie has made a name for herself. Whether that name is entirely good is a different story.
But it seems Kylie Jenner can’t exactly decide who she wants to be… So lets take a journey down Culture Appropriation Lane, shall we?
Problem #1: She has no problem posing in black face.
When shade was thrown about how Jenner’s shoot was reminiscent of black face, the pop star replied, “Calm down”.* Now. Personally, I would think that enough people see a problem with the shoot, the least she could have done was apologize. Many argued she didn’t have a say in how her make up was done, but the English vocabulary has this word, “no” which is used when someone doesn’t want to do something. She could have used this word to… I don’t know, NOT do the photo shoot. Funny thing how communication works. It’s not like she needs the money or anything…
*Unfortunately Kylie Jenner deleted the picture from her Instagram before I (or any blog) could catch her comment. It’s real though. I pinky-promise.
Problem #2: DREADS.
Unacceptable… vs. Acceptable
*Deep Sigh* Photo shoots always seem to get Kylie in trouble… I will never understand why those not of a certain culture feel it necessary to model aspects of minorities that have been troubling for them. Case in point, Kylie feeling fashion forward in her dreads. As cute as they are, a lot of African Americans get slack for having dreads, real or fake…
Let us rewind to Zendaya’s faux lots incident. It was the Oscars, everybody is decked out looking amazing. Zendaya steps out wearing an off-white dress. Cool. Hair style: Dreads. Awesome… right? Apparently not, according to Guiliana Rancic, co-host of E!’s Fashion Police. Guiliana Rancic’s Comment
Kylie has also been selfie-ing herself with other Afro-American hairstyles. Here’s Amandla Stenberg’s response to Jenner’s Insta post with featuring her with cornrows.
Kylie’s Response:
Yikes. One can only hope Kylie will learn her lesson… Some day.

Love, love, love your blog! Celebrities, especially the Kardashian’s (lol) have a tendency to pull stuff like this all the time. I like how you give legitimate reasons as to why the person you are talking about is problematic as opposed to just ranting.

I do not really follow the life of Kylie Jenner but this was an interesting read and I learned something that I would not have known about.

One of the many things I dislike about Kylie Jenner is her inability to realize where she screwed up and sincerely apologize. This does a good job highlighting that! She needs to realize that her actions are inappropriate and that it’s the impact that matters more than her intent.

I’m so surprised that this blog was this short because Kylie Jenner is very problematic, but you took the important and explained why the things she does are not OK to people who may not understand.

I really enjoyed reading this post. I am definitely not a fan of Kylie Jenner and this post just reminded me why. Even if she did not intend to offend individuals with her pictures, as a public figure it is up to her to address the problem and fix it . Even if it is unwarranted, Kylie is a role model for many young girls. Therefore, she must start acting like one and take responsibility for her actions.
