2009 Senior Design Project

Three University of Pennsylvania Engineering and Applied Mechanics students participated in a PSGC funded senior design project to design, build, test, model, and fly a variable-valve hybrid rocket motor. Their rocket motor is a rocket engine that is a hybrid between a liquid and solid fueled rocket motor. The motor was fired for six seconds and the thrust recorded using a bending beam load cell. The team won 2nd place at the School of Engineering and Applied Science 2010 Senior Design Competition.

Thomas Castner is currently an engineer at Gridless Power, and Dale Yates-Berg is the Vice President at C.H. Yates Rubber Corp. Todd Tewksburg is now a Mechanical Engineer at Bala Consulting Engineers, Inc.; a company that provides engineering and consulting services. The company also offers services for LEED design and energy modeling, comprehensive IT consulting, and risk/disaster assessment.
