A big week ahead for CFW!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Beginning tomorrow activists across the country will celebrate a month of vision for a future without sexual violence. In keeping with this celebration, the PSH Commission for Women will host a week of great events. In general, April is a pretty big month of programming, so be on the lookout for more engaging presentations, plays and trips in the weeks to come. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Instead take a few moments to read up on the exciting speakers we’re hosting this week.

On Tuesday April 2nd, which is the SAAM Day of Action, the Commission teamed up with Tom Stoehm’s office to host a sexual assault awareness speaker. Angela Rose, who is a self-identified survivor of rape and the founder of PAVE (Promoting Awareness, Empowering Victims), will join us on campus to discuss rape and sexual assault awareness and prevention. Angela strives for a community of connection for people who have lived through this form of violence. Join us as we share in listening to message of empowerment and hope. She’ll be speaking from 12-1:30pm in the Morrison Gallery.

Perhaps even more excited—although it’s hard to follow that Floresact—CFW will host another guest speaker. Theresa Flores, Human Trafficking survivor and author of Slave Across the Street, will speak about prevention of and response to Human Trafficking. Theresa has some marked accomplishments as an anti-human trafficking activist and has advocated for important legislative changes in Ohio. As a result of her work, she received the governor’s Courage Award there. Her organization, Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution (SOAP), has been featured on several national television outlets. Theresa’s story is an important one, as she experienced domestic sex trafficking. Most of the time, we hear about human trafficking as something that happens in countries far away. The reality is that sex trafficking is a very real problem in our country, state, and neighborhoods. Join us for both events on Thursday April 4 from 11:50-1:15pm in W338 Olmsted and 6-7:30pm CUB Student Center.
