Don’t let the photo fool you. Lee Hyeon-Seo is from North Korea and at 30 years old, she is finally getting her college education at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea.

Hyeon-Seo is just one of a select few who have been able to flee to China from North Korea, and even more so, extremely fortunate to not have been caught and repatriated back to the DPRK.

She willingly acknowledges that she did not grow up poor, and while in China lived with relatives. She also helped her family flee from North Korea after being able to procure enough funding.

Be sure to watch her talk about her story here.

You can also read her autobiography here.
