Dr. Laura Guertin, or “Dr. G” as her students call her, is an Associate Professor of Earth Science at Penn State Brandywine. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Connecticut, she received her BA in Geology from Bucknell University (PA) and PhD in Marine Geology & Geophysics from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (FL).
Dr. G began at Penn State in 2001 and teaches a variety of general education (GN) science courses for nonscience majors. She serves as the Dean’s representative for Penn State’s College of Earth & Mineral Sciences. She is the campus coordinator of the Environmental Inquiry Minor.
Dr. G is a pedagogical researcher that investigates best practices and innovative uses for technology in K-12 and higher education. She is a co-principal investigator on a $9.2 million National Science Foundation-Targeted Math Science Partnership Grant (Award #0962792) to improve middle school Earth and space science education. Dr. G is in the Geological Society of America’s Geology Hall of Fame as the 2009 recipient of the Biggs Earth Science Teaching Award. She maintains a professional ePortfolio and a blog on geoscience education and educational technology on the American Geophysical Union’s Blogosphere (GeoEd Trek). When she travels for work, students can keep updated with the Journeys of Dr. G. She is active with the Council on Undergraduate Research and has a passion for mentoring undergraduate researchers.
