India Water Project

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalay is an all girls residential school located in Hyderabad, India that teaches 230 students.  The school wanted to find more sustainable ways to irrigate their gardens.

The Penn State chapter of Engineers Without Borders began working with the India chapter of EWB as well as Pratt and Whitney in September 2021.  The primary goal was to create a rainwater catchment or greywater filtration system.

Implementation

Representatives met in November 2021 to discuss the school’s needs.  The school discussed how they required the water for their onsite garden, which would be used for both agricultural and aesthetic purposes.

The final filtration system included our suggestion for particle filtration. The water goes through separate layers consisting of big pebbles, small pebbles, charcoal, and then finally sand. After this, the filtered water travels to an underground sump, and is pumped to an elevated water tank. Then it is filtered again by gravity and finally proceeds to the garden.

We would like to thank the EWB USA Hartford chapter (Pratt & Whitney) for collaborating with us and funding this project themselves!

Thanks to them, we were able to help complete the greywater filtration system.

They were also generous enough to provide a grant for our Uganda Water project!
