Welcome Back! (And Reminders For Fall 2019)

Dear Students,

On behalf of the Communications program, I want to welcome all of our new Communications students to Penn State Greater Allegheny and also extend a warm greeting to all of our returning Communications majors who are back on campus! I know everyone is very busy this week, but I just wanted to send along some brief reminders before the registration period for the Fall 2019 semester comes to a close.
  1. Any students who are planning on graduating at the end of this semester: you need to make sure that you have filed the official paperwork to apply for graduation. Contact your faculty advisor and/or Larissa Ciuca, our Campus Registrar (lbm12@psu.edu).
  2. Any students who are planning on graduating this year (FA19 or SP20): it is crucial that you enroll in COMM 403 this semester if a) your entrance to major (ETM) was during or after Summer 2017 and b) you haven’t taken the course already. COMM 403 will only be offered this fall. If you became a Communications major before Summer 2017, you are not required to take the course, but you are encouraged to do so if you still need to fulfill your 400-level COMM/CAS course requirement.
  3. If you have an interest in working on the student newspaper/website, please get in touch with Professor Martinelli (rum31@psu.edu), who is teaching News Writing this semester and is once again serving as the faculty advisor for the newspaper. If you’d like to chat with her about the newspaper in person, she will be at the Student Activities Fair tomorrow during common period.
  4. If you are interested in participating in WMKP Radio and/or helping to develop new programming for the Fall & Spring semesters, please get in touch with the student Station Manager, Steven Carter (sac5879@psu.edu), who will add your name to our contact list. And if you’d like to chat with Steven or I in person, we will also be at the Student Activities Fair tomorrow during common period.
  5. Our campus has a literary and arts magazine called ABSENCE, and if you’re interested in getting involved you should contact Dr. Manlove, who oversees the publication. His email is ctm10@psu.edu.
  6. I encourage everyone to bookmark the Communications program website (since you’re here already!) and to familiarize yourself with the material. If nothing else, be sure to consult the updated ‘Degree Guides’ documents that are posted online – they will help you keep track of your required courses and plan for upcoming semesters. News and updates will updated here periodically and also sent out via our Twitter account.
  7. Finally, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your faculty advisor or myself whether you have questions about your schedule, need assistance, or simply want to chat. We are here to help you out, and happy to do it.
I hope everyone has a great start to the semester and I look forward to seeing you all around campus.

Best regards,

Dr. Zack Furness
