Updates from the Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information

Maps and Geospatial Assistant position: Part-time position with openings for Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021

– New Blog posts on Maps and GIS sites page: Recent blogs included: Migrating to ArcGIS Pro, Insights for ArcGIS: Creating Interactive Dashboards, Using ArcGIS Online Analysis Tools: Conducting Online Analysis, and Learning through the Esri Academy.

-Completion of 1950s Aerial Photo Scanning Project

-GIS and Geography Education Event: May 11 (Day prior to PAGIS conference)

Overall Usage of Penn State ArcGIS Online Account: (J. Detwiler)

-Dashboard with summary of data on types of users by admin area, and college, logins, and unique users

-Discussion of future uses of this information, Raw data available for those interested, possible future Penn State GIS Day talk on ArcGIS Online usage (Nov 2020)

-J. Detwiler attending Esri Dev Summit: looking for requests for ArcGIS Online enhancements/improvmenets

Geography: New Hires, Future Masters in Spatial Data Science program being proposed

General Discussion 

-Updates to ArcGIS Online: New Map features are in Beta, new icons and screens when sharing

-Penn State ArcGIS Online account: Dashboard on usage

-PASDA updates: new imagery, partial coverage of parcels for the state, new .las files for campus

-Center for Maps and GIS updates:  Working with new classes in the Spring with ArcGIS Online (Spanish 100 and 200), Aerial photo project still underway and in the process of getting photos to fill in

Next Meeting:

-Around the week of 1/22 (6 weeks). Scheduled for 2/10 at 1pm in Mann Assembly Room (103 Paterno Library)

Discussion Items:

-Penn State GIS Day: (Co-sponsored by Penn State University Libraries and Dept. of Geography) Save the Date for speakers and activities on Tues. Nov. 13th

-Highlights from those who attended the Esri Users Conference:  More programs as part of the education showcase, Other highlights included ArcGIS Urban, ArcGIS for Indoors, and ArcGIS and BIM workflows

New graduate certificate in the Online Geospatial program, graduate certificate in geospatial programming and web map development

-Updates from Mike Mrsa: Renewal of Esri site license, Single Sign on for ArcGIS Online Organizational account (Teaching and Research): future meeting with main stakeholders to discuss user roles, credits, grouping, best practices. Some brief discussion on current users, migrating users, migrating data of user accounts, sharing among organizational groups, and current accounts.

-Campus Bird: Some attended meeting on current activities
-OPP:  Colin Grube, new to the OPP team, working on fieldwork activities, Older Trimble units will be given to the Library for future lending. Some discussion of non-Trimble products in terms of whether anyone had experience with these.
Other Discussion Items: 
-Any information on Penn State and  Amazon Cloud team (other IT contact)
-Use of Esri and/or other Penn State software in other countries
-Virtuality of ArcGIS Pro and/or inclusion in the Penn State Web Apps (other contact for this site, TLT)
-Inclusion in the public computer profile (other IT contact)
-Center for Maps and Geospatial Information: a staff member’s retirement may enable new position to be created, interest ideas pass along to Nathan.
Next GIS users meeting: ~6weeks from now (week of August 27th)
-Suggestion of a Doodle Poll for determining availability for scheduling

  • Discussion and feedback on process for students, staff, and faculty access to ESRI software
  • Discussion on other interested geospatial softwares by students, staff, faculty, and/or used in classes
  • Discussion on ArcGIS Online organizational accounts on campus including new one in Agriculture
  • Indication of new Geography course versions
  • New Hire in OPP working on field collection
  • New Visitor Map coming soon
  • Future discussion of meeting and dates to keep in mind, as in AAG conference is the week of April 9-13.
