Political Science Horizons-Penn State Mentoring Program is a one-year long mentoring program for students interested in majoring in Political Science, International Politics or Social Data Analytics (SODA). The purpose of the program is to help students lay the foundations for long-term success in their academic careers and, to assist in the academic and professional development of undergraduates from traditionally underserved backgrounds. The program sponsors and supports undergraduate experiences that help them to excel academically.

Program Goals:

  1. Support students academically by introducing them to different Penn State resources that help build useful academic skills and improve performance.
  2. Introduce students to careers that are open to Political Science majors, the paths to obtaining these jobs, and the application skills to apply for them.
  3. Create a peer community that will help support students through their first year and all their undergraduate years at Penn State-University Park.

Program Details:

The Horizon program will recruit fifteen students with a strong interest in majoring in Political Science. All first-year through third-year students are eligible. We encourage historically underrepresented students (such as first-generation or LGBTQ students, students of color, veterans, etc.) to apply, but participation is not limited on the basis of any category aside from first-year status.  The application form needs to be submitted by September 13, 2024 for consideration and successful applicants will be notified by September 16, 2024. Program events will begin on September 23, 2024. Students will attend various social, informational and career events throughout the year, have access to academic support and the opportunity to meet with Penn State Political Science alumni and speakers.
