NSBE Mission – NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) with more than 30,000 members, is one of the largest student-managed organizations in the country. NSBE is comprised of more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide, and 75 Pre-College chapters. These chapters are geographically divided into six regions. The Pennsylvania State University is located in region II.
This organization was created to help provide and show a development in diversity within the engineering community. It is here as a helpmate for not only engineers but also anyone seeking professional development and guidance within their own lives. Black engineers only making up 3% of the workforce. The National Society of Black Engineers hopes to bring that number up substantially. The STEM field has often many dropouts and a lot of people find that this field is not for them. Through the PSU chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers that started in 1989, we provide a growth stimulant that allows students to feel safe within their major, but also provide a push of encouragement to allow growth.
