Hockey Valley
So when you came to Penn State, you knew you’d get some great stuff. Your professors are pretty smart, the weather is bleepin cold, and we usually have a pretty decent football team.
Some things you didn’t realize you have, but should probably take advantage of: a top tier gym is a few hundred yards from your dorm, you can go to the art museum for free, the career services center is always willing to help you out, and you moved into Hockey Valley.
The Penn State Hockey experience is like no other. The Pegula ice arena, part of a $100 million donation from Terry Pegula (owner of the Buffalo Sabers), is one of the most beautiful arenas in college hockey, with much more spacious seats compared to Beaver Stadium. In addition to this, the Roar Zone (hockey valley’s own student section) is the best student section in hockey.
The season tickets are totally worth their money for hockey. When averaged over the season, season tickets cost you about $11 per game, a far better price to pay than to purchase standing room only for $15 at the door. If you want a great seat in the lower part of the student section closer to the rink, you should plan to arrive an hour before game time.
Even if it’s your first time, you will quickly get into the game after the puck drops. Every period starts with the timeless hockey valley chant. And when Penn State inevitably scores a goal you will scream your lungs out letting the opposing goalie know that it is “All his fault!”
Every hockey game features many events beyond the game that you will not want to miss. Character building challenges like, not trying to jump the wrong way during the hockey dance, and winning a College Bookstore gift card after playing one of the mini games between periods like “Guess the Price” and “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” create lifelong memories.
This year between the periods they ran 2 series on the jumbo. The first is an Olympic competition between the classes in various talents such as ping pong, fruit roll up eating, and musical chairs. (A competition where the seniors are quickly falling behind all the other classes). The second is a series where they interview the team on certain hot topic questions. You might be wondering which teammate would win the bachelorette. Worry no longer, there seems to be a team consensus that Christian Burger has the best reputation with the ladies.
Even if you can only make it to one game, Penn State hockey is a must visit event that you will not want to miss!
I’m glad you took the time to recommend going to a hockey game. I went to my first hockey game last weekend. We sat in the student section and it was a blast. I thought nothing could compare to football games, but it was a totally different experience that couldn’t be compared. It was so much fun to be rowdy in an enclosed space. My only recommendation for you blog is maybe to add pictures of you personally there.
Love the blog topic so far! My roommate has season hockey tickets, and she has loved every game (except the ones we lose). She particularly enjoys the old man with the blue hair! I definitely want to make it to one of the games.
I really enjoyed reading this post! I really like your chosen topic and feel like you’ll have a lot to write about. I was planning on going to a Penn State hockey game at some point and this post has peaked my interest further! I liked how detailed your descriptions were and feel that any one who reads this post will be inspired to go to a game.
Excellent work! I am not a huge sports gal, but you made the games sound so fun! Maybe I’ll have to check one of them out!
