Science on Tap: Oceanography
March 28, 2024 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Axemann Brewery, 2042 Axemann Rd Suite 125, Bellefonte, PA 16823, USAThe world's oceans are home tonearly 80% of the planet’s biodiversity, comprised of around 13% of all knownspecies. This month’s Science on Tap will feature two researchers at Penn Statethat are working to understand marine ecology, evolution, and conservation. Most marine organisms begin life as a microscopic, planktonic larva, which havethe potential to float on ocean currents for days or even months. Dr.Eric Crandall will talk about why it is so importantthat we understand marine larval dispersal, a few different methods forstudying it, and how a new NSF-funded project in the South Pacific brings twoof these methods together. Our second speaker, Dr.Todd LaJeunesse will focus on reef-buildingcorals. He will discuss his efforts on characterizing the biology of hardcorals and his work on understanding how corals and the ecosystems they supportmay respond to ongoing climate change.
