About

Graduate Program

Penn State’s graduate Creative Writing Program, better known as the BA/MA Program, is an integrated undergraduate/graduate English degree program with a creative writing concentration that students complete in two years; the first in the student’s senior year and the second in a fifth MA year. Students choose to focus in poetry or in prose and ultimately have the opportunity to craft a polished portfolio, which can then be used to apply to MFA programs outside of Penn State.

Undergraduate Program

Within undergraduate studies, Penn State’s English department offers a creative writing concentration in the English major that allows for exploration, focus, and practice in different forms of creative writing — fiction, poetry, and nonfiction — and practical writing in biography, article writing, and editing. Students develop a nuanced understanding of utilizing imaginative and practical language skills in diverse communication-based environments. For relevant course information, visit the Creative Writing Concentration page.

The English department also offers a creative writing minor, for those students not majoring in English, to explore different forms of creative writing through workshop classes to develop translatable writing skills. For more relevant course information on the creative writing minor, visit its undergraduate bulletin page.
