Please review these quick Zoom tips and hints to help with conducting classes and meetings online.
Logging into Zoom as Host:
Download the Zoom Client for Meetings from https://zoom.us/download. Then go to https://psu.zoom.us and Sign In before going to your Canvas course. This ensures that you are the Host of the meeting.
Recording your Zoom Meetings:
Once you have started your Zoom meeting as the Host, you may record your session for later review if needed. Click on the Record button in the Zoom toolbar to start:
Let your students know you are recording at the beginning of each session.
Remember to stop recording at the end of your session. Failure to stop the recording may delay or prevent you from accessing the recording.

Teaching Equations via Zoom:
- Plan ahead. Write out OR print equation sheets or notes in advance.
- If you hand-write your notes, you can scan them with an iPhone or iPad or with other free scanning apps. Or just take a photo with your mobile device, being careful to hold the device parallel to the paper.
- Share your equation sheets with students by adding them to a Canvas module. Remember to leave blanks as required.
- Start your Zoom meeting.
- Select the microphone and speakers you’ll use and test. (How to configure and test audio)
- On the bottom left side of the Zoom menu, you’ll see the options for Video selection. Make sure your webcam is selected.
- Choose Video Settings from the expandable menu adjacent to Video on the menu.
- In video settings, be sure “Mirror my video” is deselected. This is important so that your equations are not reversed in the Zoom video.
- Use a binder or clipboard, a Sharpie or marker that creates a strong, legible mark and you are ready to go.
- Adjust your positioning and lighting if necessary to be sure your work is easily read. At this point it will more important for students to see the equations than to see you. Be careful to hold the work as steady as possible.
- Voila – you have a board that you can write on with no investment in any new technology!!

Participant List in Zoom
To get a list of participants from your Zoom sessions:
1) Go to https://psu.zoom.us
2) Click Sign In and log in with your Penn State Access ID and password
3) Select Reports on the left sidebar
4) On the Reports page, select Usage
5) Enter in the date range you want to see. You can click the Participants number to view who was in the Zoom meeting session.
Require Students to Authenticate
To accurately record attendance and prevent “Zoombombing”, instructors can set their Zoom meetings to require all participants sign in using an @psu.edu email address. This will require students to verify their identities in order to join the meeting and will prevent bad actors from disrupting class meetings. Additionally, student’s behaviors will be automatically associated with their official psu email address. To add this layer of security to your meetings:
- Visit https://psu.zoom.us.
- Click Sign in and log in with your PSU credentials.
- Click Settings from the left-hand menu.
- Toggle on “Only authenticated users can join meetings”.
- Click Meetings from the left-hand menu.
- Select one of your class meetings (from Upcoming, or Previous meetings).
- Scroll down and click Edit this Meeting.
- Scroll down to Meeting Options and check the box next to “Only authenticated users can join”.
- Ensure “psu.edu users only” is selected from the dropdown menu.
- Click Save.
Students will now be required to log in to their @psu.edu account when joining Zoom meetings. If you plan on having a guest speaker in class, change the setting to “Sign in to Zoom” for that meeting only and inform the speaker they will need to create a free Zoom account in order to join.
