The student will be assessed by the clinical instructor using the APTA’s Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI). A thorough review of this document will be provided to the student prior to the beginning of their first clinical experience.
The following guidelines are utilized by the ACCE /CI:
1. The CI will be required to complete CPI training provided by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Instructions are sent to the CCCE for each clinical instructor prior to the student’s arrival.
2. The ACCE will communicate with the CCCE/CI to ensure that they are aware of the expectations and objectives for each clinical experience prior to their completion of the mid-term portion of the experience.
3. RED FLAG Criteria: If any of the first five criterions are rated below a 75%, this places that student at risk for failure of this clinical experience and the ACCE should be notified at this time.
4. If a student is at risk for failure the ACCE, CI, and Student will meet to discuss the specific clinical issue and provide the appropriate remediation for the student.
5. In most cases a learning contract will be developed to outline areas of concern and will be monitored closely by the ACCE and CI. The objectives set forth must be attained at the specified date/times in order for the student to be successful.
6. If the student is NOT successfully remediated, the student will fail the affiliation, regardless of the outcome of the other criterion.
7. The student is required to achieve a 75% or higher in all 14 evaluative criteria. If the student does not meet this requirement will result in failure of the clinical experience.
8. The CI will be required to complete both mid-term/final evaluations, review their assessment with the student, and submit it electronically to the ACCE for review.
9. The student is also required to complete the CPI as a self-assessment for both the mid-term and final experience. A student’s grade will not be submitted until the ACCE verifies completion of the evaluation.
10. If there are any inconsistencies with the grade of the CPI and/or comments by the CI, the ACCE will discuss this with the CI to verify accuracy of CPI assessment.
11. The ACCE reserves the right to determine the final grade for after reviewing the CPI.
12. The ACCE averages the scores of each criterion to arrive at a percentage/letter grade for the student. Each clinical experience grading expectations are based their level of experience and is defined in the course syllabi for 395E, 395F, 395G.
