Why I Chose Public Relations

ValueofPR

When I came into college, I was a Journalism major. I thought writing stories about people for a living was exactly what I should be doing. I wanted to take facts someone gave me and turn them into a beautiful story that would get printed in the magazines. Those ideas of getting published in People Magazine and being ‘Reporter of the Year’ quickly changed when I came to college.

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and it was never something I wanted to throw away. I also love interacting with people and working in a team environment. As I continued to grow as a student and I learned more about different areas of communications, Public Relations stood out to me. I would be able to use my writing skills in a variety of ways, as well as get creative with campaigns. I would be interacting with team members on a regular basis, as well as clients and the general public.

I haven’t figured out exactly what I want to do with Public Relations, whether it is working in an agency in New York City or working for a non-profit in Atlanta. There are so many options for PR professionals and I love the opportunities I have been able to get based on the major I have chosen to go into. Public Relations is consistently changing and I love the fast-paced environment. I will never stop learning, even when I have been in the field for thirty years, and that is why I can’t wait to get started with my career.
