a2Z – Finishing The Alphabet

I finished working with the alphabet and I think it turned out well. The final idea was to put pins into a cork board and fill the negative space with the pins. It was more of a challenge with certain letters such as L and P and T. I ended up keeping a bit of a border around each letter since it was more of a 3D photograph and it added the shadows in. Here is a before and after of what the editing looked like.

I had to edit each picture into fitting a specific box so that when I made the GIF file, it would look perfect. Here is the final of all of the letters:

It was pretty tedious getting each letter to be perfectly shaped and filled up to the exact square but in the end I think it worked out well.

As a tester, I played with the letters of my name to make sure I knew how to properly make a GIF of the alphabet.

I played with the time of each letter and finally decided that this was a decent time, I did have a mistake where the C is a bit longer than the others but it was all a learning experience.

Here is the final GIF file:

After playing around, I decided I wanted it to be a bit slower so you could see the actual letters a bit more as it played.

a2Z- Final Sketches

As the day grows closer, I have completed the final sketches f what every letter will roughly look like. I went into the sketchbook and worked out the details of where thy will go.

This is a rough count of course. Not every pin will be accounted for but it will be the same shapes to keep the letters visible. Some little areas may change to be more ecstatically pleasing. After this, I will be actually doing most of the letters and transferring them onto the computer where I can edit the photo and keep up with the project.

I am finalizing ideas for each letter. This letter O was originally only three rows in the middle of the letter and I found that four, closer rows of pins looks better for the project.

a2Z – Physical Progress

As I am working, I did a few tester letters to see how things would be going. Seeing how I would make each letter and each curve of the letters is a challenge but I am looking forwad to the creative process of it.

The letter B looks very good in my opinion. I am very happy with how it comes out. You can clearly see the negative space and see what I mean by saying I will use the corkboard as the letter and work with the square and pins to make the letter.

The letter O that I experimented with looks good though I feel it could improve. Maybe I could go about moving the pins over and adding a fourth row down to make it more evident that that is supposed to be the negative space.

a2Z – Sketchbook to Physical

As time progressed, I made cut in an old piece of corkboard in a few sizes to test out what size I would be using. I decided that since the pins I had were relatively small I would go with the smaller option.

Looking into my options, since I had such a setback early in the semester that I would have to consider my ideas. My original plans were to go with a color blind option were I would fill the board with certain colors and the letter would be a slightly different color, similar to the color blind tests with letters and numbers.

I had to scrap that as it would take a minimum of an hour to do each letter and the deadline was approaching. The next idea was using the corkboard as the letter and fill in the while background with the pins.

I think it will actually be more interesting to work with the negative space of the letters and using different colors for each letter to differentiate by each one.

a2Z – Sketchbook

As the new semester starts, moving into Dart 303 has been a challenge. The beginning of this project has been a blur for me as many outside factors kick in but I am making an effort to catch up. For this post I will discuss my ideas for the first project. We are starting a project where we make an alphabet out of art, photography, and/or digital media. I had a few ideas but for a while, I was not happy with the few I did.

I started very light on the book bu as I progressed into the ideas, I discovered a new idea that made me really think about it.

My brain totally split into a creative cloud and ideas flowed to me. I started to dislike the book idea more and more so I decided to go with the corkboard option as my final choice.
