Brief Description of Research ProjectOver time, the exposure of prestressing steel to corrosive agents can lead to complete loss of strands and, in extreme circumstances, to complete failure of bridge beams. The occurrence of extensive visible corrosion-induced damage in bridges located near seawater, such as the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) approach spans, has emphasized serious concerns about the safety of such bridges. Research is necessary to assess the impact of corrosion on the local and global behavior of bridges and to establish mitigation techniques to ensure long-term durability.
