On Tuesday, March 3rd, 2020 was Super Tuesday. It was the day in which 14 states like Alabama and Virginia voted to see who would be the Democratic Presidential candidate for the election in 2020.
In both the New York Times and the Politico article, they talk about how many delegates each candidate got. In particular, candidates Joe Biden, former vice president to President Barack Obama, and Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont, were leading in the primaries. However, Joe Biden was leading the primaries out of the two of them. In one striking example, Alabama gave Joe Biden 63% of the votes as compared to Sanders’s 16.5%.
However, there are some states that have had close calls, like in Maine, where Biden won the primaries, but very narrowly, getting 34% of the votes as compared to when Sanders got 32% of the votes.
Other candidates, like Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, have gotten numbers that range from 5% of the vote to 21% of the vote, which is both held by Warren. Bloomberg’s numbers fall between that range. However, it is important to note that neither Warren nor Bloomberg has won a single state in the Super Tuesday elections.
Who will win the primaries in the United States and thus be the official Democratic candidate for the US Elections in 2020? It is too early to say right now, but predictions go to Joe Biden right now. As Biden is hundreds of delegate votes ahead of Sanders, it is unlikely to see what it would take for Sanders to win the primaries right now. Unless Sanders gets at least 57% of the primary votes for the next states that are up to vote for the primaries, it is unlikely to see Sanders to be the Democratic nominee for the Presidential Election.
So, what will it take to get that 57% of the votes? Sanders’s supporters need to go out and vote for the candidate to be officially a nominee. That means, the people who are his supporters, mostly young people, need to go out and make sure that their votes are being counted right now, as it is crucial that their votes are being counted. Our entire future and America’s future relies on the fact that people are showing up and going to vote for Sanders and not just saying that they will do that.
As said before, vote wisely after you have seen which candidate suits your views the most. And if you are of voting age, go vote.
