Speaking Publicly or Publicly Speaking?

Speeches are never easy to compose or deliver. Each speech subject has its own challenges and requires a different attitude to process. Overall, I have been very impressed with the quality of the speeches our classmates have given. Across the board the civic artifacts have been different and interesting. I love how people were able to take the most common posters and analyze them in a way I would have not been able to see before. Even the media platforms of our civic artifacts have been varied from posters, to pictures, advertisements, videos and songs.

I believe that when presenters aren’t behind the podium they feel closer and more accessible to their audience. It gives the audience the feeling they are included in the conversation instead of being talked at. It also makes a big difference when students amplify their voice to give the idea their topic is relevant and important and must be heard. Another great quality I have noticed is hand gestures. Hand gestures provide a great deal more of personality and life to the speaker. It is also a great way to emphasize different points. Voice inflection is another great way to emphasize certain points. Speaking softer, louder, faster, or even slower, provides a different dimension to the speech. Stylistically, these are main points that I have seen through the speeches, that have proven to exemplify certain speeches. I have noticed that slideshows are great presentation tools because they keep the audience engaged.

Qualities I think everyone could work on is exuding confidence while speaking. It is hard speaking in front of an audience you still don’t know very well, but feeling confident helps you with speaking louder and in a more consistent tone. Other improvements include using less notes while speaking, it can be slightly distracting to the audience when you look at your notes, however I think most people have been handling that pretty well. I realize I put this in the paragraph above, but I think it can also be included in here. Inflection is a key point when it comes to speech delivery, and therefore is a attribute I think everyone, including me, could work on.

On the whole , I have learned a lot from the speeches given so far and can’t wait to hear the rest!

Swimming In Foreign Waters

Since it’s starting to get cooler outside, I decided to select a location in a more tropical climate. Samoa is a group of islands located off the country of Australia. Out of the ten islands, the island of Upolu is the main hub for the country of Samoa. The capital Apia and the international airport are both located there. Apia has become a very upbeat place to visit in the island area. The capital has a lot to offer. Locals usually head over to the Maketi Fou which is the local farmer’s market. Here you can find colorful fruits and vegetables. All of which are completely fresh and as organic as it gets. If you’re looking to get something unique head over to the flea market. The flea market holds many local crafts like kava bowls, samoan sarongs, baskets, jewelry, and music. Upolu is mainly known for its beaches, waterfalls, and most importantly blowholes. One of the most astounding blowholes is the To Sua Ocean Trench located in the village Lotofaga. toSua-hero

To Sua is translated to “big hole” in the native language, and has been converted into a large swimming area. The water is about 30 meter deep and there is a ladder than allows swimmers to walk into the water. The site is surrounded by an amazing variety of flora and fauna. There is a small fee to enter the ocean trench area, but for an experience of a lifetime it is an insignificant cost. There is even a small beach nearby and a garden to picnic in for families. Once you land in the water you can even swim under the cave as shown in the picture below. An astounding location that is surrounded by natural beaches and gorgeous nature, To Sua is a great place to unwind!

Another site that must be seen is Togitogiga Waterfalls. A scene taken out of a magical fairytale, you will feel as if you have entered a new realm. The waterfall leads into a still pool of water, and is surrounded by lush green forest. It may take you a moment to believe it’s all real. The waterfall is located in the village of Saleilua, near the Le Pupu Pue National Park. There is a recreational area near by to play volleyball and other sports. According to locals the best time to visit is between November and April. In my opinion, a perfect time to go, considering the chilling temperatures here in Pennsylvania during that time. The waterfall is also completely free, so you are free to go and enjoy a good time. A perfect getaway when things get crazy!

Food is only third to god and family to samoans, and therefore is a huge part of their culture. Popular dishes consist of roasted chicken, homemade vegetable soups, smoky BBQ, and fresh fish salad. A major meal in Samoan culture is sunday lunch also called to’ona’i. Every sunday, locals wake up early to prepare a huge meal in time for lunch. It ends up being the only meal eaten that day with a sunday siesta following the meal.

Civic Artifact Outline

Intro:

-The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest private organizations in the world. The organization works to fight the biggest and toughest problems around the world. Bill Gates calls his organization an organization of optimists. They have been working to combat extreme poverty and poor health in developing countries. The foundation is broken down into four parts: Global Health, Global Development, Global Policy and Advocacy, and US Program. I will be showing you a video relating to the Global Development Program.

I: Describe the Artifact

-This video highlights the main issues with lack of family planning. It does this through interesting graphics and straight forward language. The foundation wants to distribute this information, but do so succinctly. The video states the issue and goes through the best ways to solve the problem. It then illustrates the benefits of the solving such an issue. The foundation has used a combination of rhetoric devices to call the public to civic duty and push for civic engagement.

II: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

-Ethos: This message is coming from a credible organization. We all know who Bill Gates is and what he has accomplished, so are more likely to believe what he says to be true and important.

-Pathos: The foundation touches upon the love mothers have for their children and how they want each one of them to succeed. This connects with us because many of us share a special bond with our mothers and can understand how much they care about us. A connection like this motivates us to be more passionate about a topic that could help other mothers.

-Logos: The foundation outlines the many benefits that contraceptives have in our society. They could allow for more educated students, better family life, better healthcare, and better futures for the next generations.

III: Kairos

-In the modern world, where many families expect their children to go to college and where women are gaining more equality on the global scale, it is the right time to bring up the idea of family planning. There is also the issue of overpopulation in many developing countries and has become a hot topic lately, family planning would essentially go hand in hand with that idea.

IV: Commonplaces/Ideologies

-Idea that all women should have access to contraceptives

-Women’s equality

-Family planning on a global scale and its benefits

Conclusion

– This video provides a credible argument about why global access to contraceptives would be a sensible solution to issues in developing countries at this time. The foundation has chosen an opportune time and advertised their cause in a succinct video encompassing the ideas of ethos, pathos, and logos. Their call to duty allows the public to provide support for the cause and become civically engaged in what seems like an important issue. Overall, the foundation has provided us with an artifact that shows us another way to be a part of the civic. Thank You!

A Road Trip Through Norway

images My family loves road trips, so I’m always looking for new, interesting trips. I recently found some, however they are a bit far away. It turns out Norway is a country full of scenic roads, and are known for their unique road trips. The most fantastic road in Norway is the Atlantic Road. It is a 8 km road the bridges the gap between the two cities of Kristiansund and Molde. It was named “Norway’s Construction of the Century” and is now a national tourist route. The Atlantic Road crosses low bridges and protrudes over the sea. When the seas are calm you are able to see whales and seals. The entire trip takes about thirty minutes to complete, but I can guarantee you will spend more time because you will want to stop to see the many breathtaking views along the way. Worried about stopping traffic, don’t be! There are four rest areas which allow you to relax and take in the beauty around you. Other sites along the way include the Kvernes Stave Church, a church from 1300 AD, The Bremsnes Caves, and the Kvernes Rural Museum. Fishing and diving are two of the most popular recreational activities to do by the Atlantic Road. The Atlantic Road is a magnificent site, crossing over islands and connecting seven bridges!

Another amazing drive is the Geiranger-Trollstigen Route, which includes the UNESO protected Geirangerfjord and the Trollsteign Mountain road. This drive is much longer encompassing 106 km of road. The route has been a great attraction ever since it opened in 1936. This route is known for its crazy hairpin turns and dizzying mountainsides. There are six rest areas along this path, allowing for much needed breaks! You may need to pull into one of those rest areas if you decide to drive through the Eagle Road stretch, which includes 11 hairpin bends. One of the most popular rest stops is Flydalsjuvet, since it overlooks Geirangerfjord. There is also the Juvet Landscape Hotel, which is an amazing piece of architecture that highlights the beautiful nature that surround it. Gudbransjuvet is a system of whirlpools leading up to an impressive gorge, a popular attraction for drivers along the route. One final must see site is the Romsdalen Valley, Europe’s tallest vertical overhanging rock face. There are parts of the trip that require the ferry, so it’s not just the road. A beautiful drive through a preserved nature sanctuary, your time in Norway will be unforgettable!

If you’re a fan of sea food you will love Norwegian cuisine. Norwegian salmon and arctic cod are very popular and are known to have a very delicate flavor. Ribbe is a common christmas dish favored by all natives. Ribbe is roasted pork ribs, and pinnekjott is salted, dried or smoked lamb ribs. Both of these are norwegian delicacies. If you are looking more for a sweet endeavor, you should try Multekrem, cloudberries with whipped cream, or Riskrem, rice porridge with whipped cream and red berry sauce. Norwegian food will take you on a sampling of Scandinavian culture.

National or International

As we watch the news we hear about Russia’s increasing unwillingness to cooperate with the West. Putin just released a statement establishing the fact that Russia will maintain its nuclear powers as it feels under threat. Americans have always tried to police the world and keep a general sense of peace among the world powers. Is it time we continue to take that path or do we focus on our own issues? This is a question that has been asked numerous times. However, this is an interesting time for discussions like these to be popping up. For example, there is has been a great focus on the Islamic State and its growth and affect on the population of the middle east. Why all of this focus on international news suddenly?

In the next we days we will be remembering the events of 9/11. These international issues draw our attention because we as a community are interested in our safety and security. This is the time for politicians to bring up questions of international defense. How are we approaching the situation of global safety? There are politicians like John Kerry who are depressing the issues abroad to make us feel safer at home. Only recently Obama released a report on how he wants us to have an open ended war with the Islamic State. He is using kairos to attract the nation’s support in light of the events that happened 13 years ago. It may not sound like the most respectable approach, but there have been many presidents who have pushed their ideas during times of crisis and war. It is a time when a country tends to be more united and empowered to lead change.

It will be interesting to watch how these decisions play out in the upcoming weeks. For now, our leaders have picked their time to speak.

Where’s Yerevan?

This week I found out where Yerevan was! Yerevan is in the country of Armenia. Yerevan was a city under the rule of the Soviet Union. It is now the capital of Armenia.  A city full of history and culture Yerevan is an exciting, unexpected spot for adventure. The top rated site is The Monastery of Geghard, a UNESCO world heritage site located in the city. Built in 1215, the chapel is surrounded by cliffs and carved out partially by adjacent mountains. It was founded in the 4th century, but was destroyed in the 9th century by Arabs. By the 13th century the monastery was back in business. The monastery became a pilgrimage because the Apostle Thaddeus brought the spear which had wounded christ on the cross to the monastery. The monastery has beautiful hand carvings decorating its walls on the inside. The location of the monastery is also incredible. It looks like a castle right out of one of the Lord of the Rings movies.

A must see, the monastery is a site that may give you a new perspective on life!

Another interesting site is the Matenadaran – The Museum of Ancient Manuscripts. The museum hold the world’s largest illuminated manuscript collection in the world. This is an attraction that allows visitors a view into Armenian language and provides another path to explore the culture of Armenia. It has over 17,000 manuscripts and 30,000 other documents in several different languages. The museum contains gospels from the 10th and 11th centuries and a 15th century 632 page calf skin calendar. The museum is definitely a place to explore.

Nestled in the mountains of Yerevan is Khor Virap. Khor Virap is built on the location where the first catholic church in Armenia was built. After several reconstructions of the building Khor Virap was finally established in 1662. The monastery is located in front of Mount Ararat. The mountain is the national symbol of Armenia. The monastery is also in view of the Turkish border and therefore has a few military outlook posts surrounding it. A beautiful location, with an amazing story, this site is not one to be missed!

Food is an essential part of Armenia’s culture, and they have been continuing their tasteful traditions through the years. Many people would not expect Armenian food to have links to middle eastern food, but they are surprisingly similar. Khorovats (barbequed meat) and byorek (dough stuffed with meat) are two very popular dishes. Many of Armenia’s other dishes have a variety of spices and herbs added for flavor. The meat is usually served with a special bread called Lavash, which is a very thin bread prepared in a clay oven. Armenia also has a dish called Dolma, which may ring a bell since the greeks also have Dolmas. Made with mince meat and vegetable and wrapped in vine leaves, the armenian dolma is very similar to the dolmas of the greeks.

A city filled with exciting and interesting sites and delicious food, Yerevan is a new place to explore if you’re not scared to try something new!1024px-Yerevan_2012_February

What to be passionate about?

The first blog I am planning about writing is a blog about traveling. I want to highlight locations that are not the normal vacation destinations. I have traveled to many places myself. The one thing I have noticed is often the places that aren’t written about in every other guide book, are the places that are the most amazing. This could be the backstreets of Paris and London, where no one but locals wander to. It could also be a hidden natural gem that has not yet been discovered by HGTV House Hunters International. My goal is to show you that there are so many places out there that are worth your time. I will provide readers with a variety of locations. Some of these places may be a short drive, others might requires a lengthy flight. However, I can guarantee these sites will warrant your attention. I will include what is worth doing, exploring, and even eating at points. I plan on including a few trips I have personally made to unusual places in my time traveling. I hope this will be a fresh view from travel blogs you’ve seen before.

The second blog idea I have is one about food. I will discuss food that is significant to different cultures. I want to provide you with a story about the food I’m sharing. There is so much we can learn about a culture from its food. It describes centuries of agriculture in the region and may explain why the people from that region look a certain way. The tastes of every culture are vastly different. They can explain why people act a certain way. They provide us insight to their everyday habits. Food is the center of conversation for a family after a long day’s work. Food is a way for old friends to meet again. Food allows us to travel without ever leaving out kitchen. Food is the one connector between all humans. A necessity, but also an art, food is the universal communicator.

A Country Of Immigrants

We perceive Ivy League schools to be spaces of intellectual freedom and a forum for social expressivity. However, every year there are stories of students from lower income families who are unable to fit in socially. They can not compete with the financial spending of their peers at the school. They’ve been accepted but not truly “accepted”.

What does it mean to be “accepted” in America? Adichie explains that there is less of acceptance and more of tolerance. We have become a country of tolerance, and I believe Adichie’s main idea of civic revolves around this idea.

Adichie gives us two examples in the first chapter about what she perceives to be the norm in America. The first is her encounter with the white guy with dreadlocks who is wearing shabby clothing. She expects him to openly accept her blog and her ideas. He “looks” like he would be more open minded. In her case, the complete opposite occurs, the man with the dreadlocks tells her,”Race is totally overhyped’, and ‘ it’s all about…the haves and have-nots.” Adichie’s view of the american civic is molded by her past experiences. She shows us that to be an American is the most general, vague, definition in the world. We can be close minded or accepting as seen in her conversation with the middle aged man on the plane, who told her how black children are rarely adopted, yet him and his wife welcomed an african child into their life. We can be called racist by everyone else in the world, because no other country deals with the type of diversity we do. Yes there are racists in America, but they do not define the entire nation. Even Adichie is able to see that with her unusual encounters with everyday people. America is a country of immigrants, where civic is perhaps more vague for a citizen here than it is anywhere else.

Rhetorical Activities

Recently Rand Paul has been firing at Hilary Clinton for her work as former secretary of state. Paul argues Clinton was unable to handle the Benghazi situation correctly. The only fault with Paul’s argument is that it’s not an argument. Paul has simply stated his political belief to the media in order to elevate his popularity amongst fellow republicans.  Clinton’s only response was, “He can talk about whatever he wants to talk about, and if he decides to run, he’ll be fair game too.”

Instead of discussing the issue at hand, Clinton has turned this ‘argument’ into a verbal spat. There has been no actual discussion or meeting between Paul and Clinton on this issue. A rhetorical argument would consist of several changes of opinion and a great deal of listening. Politics in this country has decided that the rhetorical style of argument does not fit in their schedule. Listening requires a great deal of work and a great deal of compromise. Stewart makes a point that has failed to be heard: there is no winner or loser in an argument. If only this definition became more proliferate, we may not be so scared to actually argue about what we care about.

After reading the article that discussed the topic above, it was very clear that every statement either party made was made to “win” the argument. The crazy thing is by one person winning, nothing ever gets accomplished. If we all just stuck to our opinions and “won”, we may still be stuck in an era where this technology would have failed to exist. Steve Jobs was able to convince others his technology would take us to a new level, if no one would have listened there would be no Apple today. I think it’s time our politicians look at the world around them. They live in a world where the chaos can only be resolved by listening. One can never underestimate even the stupidest sounding idea, like selling a computer made in a garage.
