TED talk outline/draft

Intro:

Good Morning everyone! How many people here would say they feel stressed on a normal basis?…. That seems about right. According to a study done by Carnegie Mellon University, the stress in women has increased by 18% and the stress in men has increased by 24% from 1983-2009. That’s an incredible increase!

Causes:

Many people feel the reason for this stress is the raised competitiveness in the academic and work field. It is increasingly getting harder to get into college and as many of you know the acceptance rates are becoming lower and lower. This raises the bar for students when it comes to applying. Students are balancing school work, activities, sports, and family. Fifteen to twenty years ago, students didn’t have the huge checklist that exists today for getting into college. I know when I was in high school, I was very concerned about having leadership positions, being part of the right clubs, and showcasing myself as a well rounded student. I didn’t always have time to do things I really loved. In fact, most students our age rate their personal stress level at 5.4 out of 10 according to the american psychological association. That is 1.4 points higher than the healthy amount of stress for 18-33 year olds or Millennials. When interviewing my uncle, he said when he was young they weren’t surrounded by technology like we are. This meant their wasn’t much to do besides study, hang out with friends, or play outside. They used to go to the movies on special occasion and splurge their pocket money. Don’t you wish we had it simple! Overall, their were less stressors years ago. That explains why 52% of surveyed Millennials said their stress levels increased in the last 5 years.

Enough about school, what about work? Life is supposed to get easier once you get your college degree right? Huffington Post has reported that the Work Stress Survey found 83 percent of Americans were stressed at work in 2013. That number was 10% lower in 2012. To put that in perspective every 8 out of 10 Americans is stressed out from their job. Why are we so stressed? For starters, most people are working longer hours for lower pay. 14% of employees say that low pay and heavy workload are their number one stressors, and both low pay and heavy workload were provided as the number one stressors in any given workplace. I have seen this in my own family. When my father comes home on Friday, his work day is not finished. He still has hours of emails and phone calls. It doesn’t end there, he usually has at least 2-3 hours of work on Saturday, and sometimes more. Sunday is his only real day off. In a society where work comes home, it’s not surprising that stress levels have increased so drastically.

Conclusion:

I want all of you to close your eyes, imagine yourself as one of your grandparents or an elderly person you know. Now go back fifty years. You’re a senior in high school, what is the next step for the majority of you sitting in this room? You may not believe it, but 50 years ago most people were perfectly content with a high school degree. They would go out and find a job and work their way up through the ranks. Now, every student is expected to go to college, or have a set vocational path. Many people argue it is just our perception of stress that is the cause for these higher levels of stress, but most of the factors are related to the expectation of society. As a society, we expect so much more from our children academically and professionally. That is the true cause for this increase in stress. Thank You!

Fake it ‘Till You Make It

My favorite TED talk, is a TED talk my high school economics teacher showed us part way through the semester. As a senior in high school, it didn’t resonate with me as much as it does now. The video is about confidence, body language, stress, and how we see ourselves. When you’re a senior in high school, you’ve submitted your college applications, taken all your big exams, and now you’re just waiting for the final decision. As a freshman in college, you’re starting from the beginning. No one knows who you are, you don’t have a transcript, you’re just another body in a sea of people. Many people are overwhelmed with stress. I’m sure many of us have gone through and may still be going through the “Do I belong here?” phase. There’s so much to do and to get done, that we most of us forget to take a step back and evaluate ourselves. Amy Cuddy’s lecture emphasizes how our behavior reflects our internal gauge of ourselves. The primary focus is how 2 minutes of being in a power pose can lower your cortisol(stress) levels and raise your testosterone(confidence) levels. This is very important because those of us who feel like we don’t belong sometimes need that extra confidence to affirm that we do belong and we have every reason for being here.

I really like her style because she starts off with the scientific facts and proofs which display the work she has done in her social experiments about body language. This gives the audience a good understanding of her background and her area of expertise. She also involves the audience to make them feel more comfortable and included in the discussion. She keeps her lecture very simple as to not load the audience with highly technical vocabulary. This makes her more accessible as a speaker. Her presentation is in time with talk, it is also a very simple presentation with mostly pictures. This allows the audience to focus on Amy, and not the presentation only. The slides are only a tool, not a crutch. My favorite part of the lecture is Amy’s recollection of her personal experience. At this point, she has explained her subject clearly and now she is using an anecdote to emotionally connect with her audience. This brings the audience closer to the discussion and, in my opinion, helps them remember Amy and her message better.

I will be doing my paradigm shift paper on stress in the last 50 years, so it’s interesting for me to see the different ways stress can affect someone. Here is the link to the video:http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are#t-505338

Happiest Place in America

San Luis Obispo is supposed to be one of the happiest places in the world. You might be wondering what that means. It means there is a castle in the area, a beautiful beach that isn’t crowded, and plenty of vineyards in the area. San Luis Obispo is also home to California Polytechnic State University and a few other colleges as well. The area is known for its natural beauty, with its many forests. I am starting to see why the residents of San Luis Obispo are so happy!

Castles aren’t really an American thing. However, in San Luis Obispo, Hearst Castle make you wonder whether you are in America. Ostentatious ceilings, furniture and art flaunt the interior of Hearst. The castle was built by William Randolph Hearst, a publishing tycoon. With over 250,000 acres to work with, Hearst hired architect Julia Morgan to create a castle with 165 rooms and 137 acres of outdoor space. I went to Hearst Castle with my family when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I don’t remember much, but the one thing I remember is the Neptune Pool. The pool is surrounded by roman architecture and statues. It looks over the mountains and forests of San Luis Obispo. The view is magnificient and so is the pool itself! Heart Castle may be touristy, but it’s worth the trip.

Ever heard of an empty beach? Seems like an anomaly here in the Northeast United States, where everyone flocks to any beach available in the summer. I guess the yearlong pleasant weather creates a different atmosphere at Avila Beach. Considered a getaway for locals, Avila sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The beach has just enough hotels, shops, and restaurants, but not too many. There is a reason the locals come here. The beach is a lost less crowded and the location is fantastic. Avila also accomodates a large range of people. It is seen as a more economical location to vacation because of their greater variety in lodging. So far, these Californians have a castle, and a perfect getaway, what else do they need?

The residents of San Luis Obispo have a wide variety of vineyards they can visit. Every wine enthusiast knows about Sonoma Valley, but San Luis Obispo has some pretty good vineyards as well. The region has 30,000 acres of vineyards and over 200 wineries. The reason the wine in the area is so critically acclaimed is because of the soil in which the grapes are grown. San Luis Obispo has a very unique microclimate that allows for both grapes that need a warmer or cooler climate. In some areas there is also a concentration of marine sediment in the soil which allows for more superior Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other wines as well. San Luis Obispo also offers a great slew of higher education institutes for the students in the area. Overall, San Luis Obispo has been able to combine the greater parts of life into one location. No wonder they are seen as one of the happiest places in the world!

Single Story

Adiche’s TED talk on single stories is a comprehensive observation of the images we create in our minds about other people, culture, and places. Africa is seen as the third world continent with no hope for itself. There must always be a “foreigner” as she says, to come rescue the day. However, we don’t know any different, because we have no personal experiences and we haven’t ever been shown anything else. In a world that is supposedly so interconnected, we seem like a very ignorant society. We are quick to create single stories about a subject and then not look any further for more stories. I think we should be forced to gather multiple stories about something we are truly unfamiliar with.

I understand what Adiche is talking about because I can relate to her experiences. I am indian, and most of my family lives in India. We try to go back once a year to see everyone. I have gathered many experiences in my several trips, but I forget that my friends do not have those same experiences. They have only seen the poor children on the commercials on television or watched Slumdog Millionaire. On the other hand, they have heard of the doctor/engineer/strict parents stereotype from every type of media possible. These are all single stories, and they are true, but like Adiche said they are not the complete truth. There are very wealthy people in India, in fact the CEO of Pepsi is an Indian Woman, and some of the wealthiest corporate giants in the world are Indians. There are also indian writers, illustrators, lawyers, tv people, and movie celebrities. If India were a country only comprised of doctors and engineers it probably wouldn’t be functioning today.

Single stories are an acceptable place to start your knowledge of a topic, but it is by no means the end of your knowledge on that topic. If we are to truly understand one another, and to become a “global” world, it is essential we dig deeper. It’s when we dig deeper, we find there is more in common than there is different, and the best place to start a relationship is in the similarities not the differences. Adiche is making a point much bigger than just thoughts created by literature. Times are changing, but are views are remaining the same. This can’t continue, because our views must stay in parallel to the changing world around us. That is the only we can go from a society of single stories to a society of multiple stories.

New York, no, not the city!

Upstate New York, remains a secret to many people in the east coast. In fact, I doubt our family would have discovered it had it not been for a project my dad had in Albany. Just a message, Albany is not the most interesting state capital in America. However, it is surrounded by some of the prettiest areas. Hudson, New York is perhaps the most lovely city. There is a reason there was a school of art named after the place. The best time to visit Hudson is in the fall. The leaves are a hundred shades of orange, yellow, and red.

On top of a mountain with a view of the Hudson River, is the great estate of Olana. Olana belonged to Frederic Church. Church was a very well known american painter who was the lead painter at Hudson River School. The Hudson River School was a school for painters, but became more of a group of painters. Any painting that came out of the school was considered very valuable. It is easy to see where Church got his inspiration. With 18 acres of land looking over the Hudson River, and hundreds of trees surrounding the house, Church chose a great location to document the beauty of Hudson. I highly recommend taking a trip up to Olana. It has the most amazing views to offer. The picture above of the Hudson River was taken at Olana. Not only is the outside magnificent, but so is the inside. Church was an artist and his artistic personality can be seen throughout the house. The interior has a middle eastern/egyptian flair to it. Church brought textiles from china and india as well to adorn the interior. It’s a beautiful site and completely worth the trip.

The streets of downtown Hudson are filled with little boutiques and churches. Some of the shops you’ll find include a bookstore where an old firehouse was, various antique sellers, and a swedish cosmetic shop. A quiet downtown, mostly filled with locals, and very few tourists wandering around, Hudson is a great place to slow down. One of my favorite places is The Spotty Dog (firehouse bookstore). They have great nooks to read a book, live music and a bar. If you’re looking for a place filled with people and things to do, Hudson may not be the place for you. It is actually a very small place mostly known for its abundance of firehouses and the river.

DSC_0644

My favorite place to eat in Hudson is Baba Louie’s. Baba Louie’s is the most original pizza shop you will try. They make their pizza on sourdough bread and use all fresh produce. They have been using the same starter for their bread since the shop opened. They have the most fantastic creations. The particular favorite of our family in called Cole’s Creation, which is a pizza with arugula, balsamic vinegar, mozzarella, feta, red onions, tomatoes, and a little bit of garlic. That’s just one of the gourmet pizzas they have. A must have for anyone who goes to Hudson, I guarantee you will become a Baba Louie lover once you try their pizza.

Rhetorical Analysis Essay Draft

How Googly Are You?

Google has managed to become more than just a company. Google has become a lifestyle. The general population may argue, Google is just a search engine, or an email provider, but dig deeper and you will find Google is embedded all around us. Their product range varies from personal calendars to self driving cars. Google’s new ad campaign focuses on how much we rely on Google for everyday questions and answers. They call it the Google Search campaign. Each ad in the campaign explores different aspects of people’s lives and how google has been a part of those experiences. One of their most watched commercials is their Google “Grads” ad. This ad focuses primarily on the high school career of students, from both the academic and social perspective. Google progresses from the first day of freshman year to graduation day. This commercial related to thousands of students across the country, and Google was able to achieve this through various forms of rhetorical persuasion.

Google’s best move was the time of their release or their kairos. Google released their video on May 20, 2014. This was about a month before most high school seniors were graduating. Google could not have picked a more opportune time to release this video. Most seniors are becoming nostalgic about their past four years in high school at the time around graduation. Google picked up on this and published a commercial that would not only pull at the heart strings of students, but also teachers and parents. The kairos brought about the discussion of graduation and high school accomplishments. Students became emotionally invested in the conversations surrounding their future, and Google was now a part of that conversation. Google found a way to become more personal and they did at the exact right time. Therefore, their commercial was watched by over 4 million people on YouTube, not to mention the countless times it played on every television station until the end of July when the nostalgia of high school finally started wearing off.

The time of release of this commercial was superb, however if it were not for the actual content, the commercial would not have the impact it had. Google greatly used pathos to grab the attention of their audience. The video starts off with the nervousness of a freshman about to start school. Any student can relate to that first day of starting at a new school. Google encompasses that feeling through the compilation of students picking out outfits, working at their locker combination, and meeting their new teachers. Every girl has spent countless hours putting together the perfect first day outfit, it’s a memory that invokes years of anxiety, thrill, and joy of being back with friends. As the video progresses, viewers see students participating in different activities such as band, robotics club, and the junior military academy. Google knows students will think of all the sleepless nights and early morning band practices they muddled through, when they watch a clip of a girl complaining about her workload or a band practicing on the football field.  Google has produced a reflection of their consumers to make the consumers feel more at ease with their label.  In using this strategy, they have their consumers emotionally attached to the video, which makes the commercial a personal token instead of just another plea for attention.

The use of commonplaces in the video further the consumer’s interest in Google. The company uses the significance of life events to connect with the consumer. The most important being receiving a license to drive. Teenagers mark that event as the first milestone of independence. It is a universal idea that someone who knows how to drive, has reached a mature point in their life. Google highlights the excitement and pride teens show after receiving their license, yet again igniting the excitement of all the viewers sitting at home watching. Braces have become the signal of perfect teeth. Almost every child who could afford even the thought of getting braces, had them. The more significant part was the great reveal, when the teeth were all finally perfectly lined up. Google takes advantage of that feeling of relief and reminds students of the time they went to get their braces removed. They are calling out to the community of young adults to reach back and remember their past, because Google had to be involved at some point during that process.

Google has folded in ideologies of the American mind in their ad to further support their product. The two main ones identified are the idea of the perfect prom and the impressive graduation. Here in the United States, prom is not just another dance. Prom is the last hurrah, the last chance to prove yourself to your peers. Prom has become the dance where each person is allowed to be special and pretty. Google wants to make you feel pretty and special, so they can’t leave out the one day that reflects those exact qualities. The other significant ideology is the picture of a student receiving their diploma in their cap and gown. The image that follows that is the image of a college acceptance letter and plenty of loud screams for accompaniment. Google checks all those points with the last part of their video. They play out several students exclaiming their overwhelming joy of being accepted into college. Some of the students are surrounded by their families, other students are filmed by their parents, while other look up how far their new home is located. This is all followed by several graduation caps being thrown in the air, marking the end of one chapter and the search of another. Google cleverly ends the video with the phrase Search On. They have taken the American ideologies and created a commercial that fits into the boundaries of those ideologies.

Google has produced a very successful commercial with their emotional play on consumers’ hearts. In fact, it is very noticeable at how little Google actually shows its products, they want to show you more of the clippings from everyday life, so you feel emotionally connected to the video. This works, because as a graduating senior students are thinking about the journey they have taken for the last four years, which encompasses so much of what google shows. If one was to watch this at the end of their senior year, which is when google released the ad, you take a personal interest in the ad and are more likely to incorporate more google into your life. This was a very smart marketing strategy. They also keep it short and simple in the design as to not overwhelm the viewers but enough to still hold a space in our memories. Google has showed the world its great capability to take on almost any project and make it Googly, and in this ad they are forcing us to demonstrate our googliness.

Family Road Trip Part 2

The main chunk of our time in Canada was spent on the Cabot Trail. The Cabot Trail is a drive that goes through the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. The loop is a total of about 300 km. It’s not a very well known trail since it hasn’t become completely taken over by tourism. This made the trail a very different experience from previous trips we’ve made on other road trips. The only places to stay were mainly bed and breakfasts, cabins, and a resort or two hidden away. My mom had booked cabins along the trail for the three days we were on the trail. There are also not many restaurants on some parts of the trail. The one night we had two options a pizza place 20 km away or a italian restaurant 15 km away. That gives you an idea of how untouched the island is. Although, it may seem crazy to drive out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but cabins and pizza shops, it was an incredibly relaxing journey. The entirety of the Cabot Trail has the most amazing views and the natural beauty. Here are a few pictures of our time.

IMG_0590IMG_0558IMG_0571

After the Cabot Trail, we went on a whale watching cruise where we saw pilot whales. Pilot whales are about 15 feet long and are mostly black with a rounded head. It was probably one of the best parts of the trips because riding by the whales felt exhilarating. Pilot Whales stay in groups when they travel, so we would see three or four of them at one time. It was incredible how close we were able to get to them. They were only 10-15 feet away from our boat. The ride itself was very choppy, but the experience was so extraordinary it didn’t matter. This was our last stop in Canada. For the rest of the trip we drove back to Maine, and stayed in the town of South Harbor, which is very close to the Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park has gorgeous beaches and is also home to Cadillac Mountain. The mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic Seaboard and is also the first place to see sunshine for part of the year. As you can imagine being on top of such a point, well you feel like you’re on top of the world! In Bass Harbor there is also the Unites State Coast Guard Bass Harbor Head Light Station. This is another beautiful lighthouse right on the edge of the water. Then there is Bar Harbor, which is the main tourist and shopping area. If you’re looking for a good place to eat or to buy an interesting souvenir, Bar Harbor is the perfect place to go. After spending an amazing week and a half traveling around national parks, we ventured back home. It was definitely one of the best road trips we have taken!

P.S. The picture I have on my blog as my background was taken at sunrise on the Cabot Trail!

Idea for Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Google has become a part of our everyday lives. We check our email through gmail, we ask any and every question through the search engine,  we coordinate on projects over google drive, google has worked its way into our every aspect of life. The ad I would like to analyze is the google search ads. In particular the ad that documents the life of high school freshman going through different stages of their life until they graduate. It shows how google has helped these students with things from social situations to academic life. The video is called “Grads”. One of my friends actually showed it to me at the end of senior year, and I realized then how successful google had become into squeezing into every aspect of my life. In the ad, Google shows you their different applications but not in the typical advertising way. They demonstrate how people are using them, and you feel like you could be that person looking up the directions to that university you just got accepted to (Penn State!). It is very noticeable at how little google actually shows its products ,they want to show you more of the clippings from everyday life, so you feel emotionally connected to the video. This works, because as a graduating senior you’re thinking about the journey you’ve taken for the last four years, which encompasses so much of what google shows. If you watch this at the end of your senior year, which is when google released the ad, you take a personal interest in the ad and are more likely to incorporate more google into your life. This was a very smart marketing strategy. They also keep it short and simple in the design as to not overwhelm the viewers but enough to still hold a space in our memories. Google has showed the world its great capability to take on almost any project and make it googly and I want to analyze how they do that.

Family Road Trip Part 1

This past summer, my family took on quite the trip. We drove up to Cape Breton in Canada. It’s about a fourteen hour drive. However, we had a few pit stops along the way. Our first stop was in Kennebunk Port, Maine.  Kennebunk is a small coastal town that actually is the home of President George W Bush summer house. We were only there for a few hours, but it was absolutely beautiful. They have this incredibly old church by the sea.                  IMG_3380

When you’re there you feel like you’re in the some british novel, a stone church, the sea bashing against the shore, and and endless view of rolling mountains. Kennebunk Port is a great place to take a quick stop, but it is very touristy. That basically means it can get pretty crowded, so it may not be the best place to wind down. Our next pit stop, Portland, Maine was slightly different. Portland is a city that is one big mashup of historical significance, natural beauty, and artistic expression. One of the best parts of Portland is the many lighthouses they have. Each lighthouse has a unique quality, my favorite was the one on Cape Elizabeth. Cape Elizabeth is actually the United States Coastal Guard Portland Head Light. That means the Coast Guard manages part of the light house. Cape Elizabeth is amazing because is has amazing views of the coast. It also has a remarkable trail you can hike on. The trail leads you away from the lighthouse to get an incredible look of the entire area. We visited about 5 lighthouses while we were Portland. Like I said before they were all very different.

IMG_3465

IMG_3404

That night we took an overnight ferry to Yarmouth, Canada. We were able to take our car on the boat, which was something I have never experienced. The cruise had little cabins for all the passengers. The ship also had two dining areas, a snack place, a casino, a massage and spa area, an of course a kid’s area. I was surprised at the amount of amenities they had for an overnight cruise. They all had a unique option for travelers that didn’t want a cabin. They had a floor that had seats like those in airplanes, which could recline. If you were traveling by yourself, this would probably be a better option and also a cheaper option. They also had showers on the floor, so it wasn’t just a floor of seats.

IMG_3496

Once we got to Yarmouth the next morning, we drove through customs and drove to Lunenberg. Lunenberg has this very famous row of colored houses that is marked as a UNESCO World Heritage site. After lunch, we headed to Peggy’s Cove, which is by far the most breathtaking lighthouse site I have ever seen. The lighthouse is on a broad landscape of milky white rocks, it feels like you can see the end of the world from the top of those rocks. It’s at some point you forget about material beauty and see the world’s true beauty. To finish off an amazing day we went to Nova Scotia’s capital, Halifax. I will catch you up on the rest of the trip next week!
