Welcome back to Passion Blog 3! It is that special time of the week when we get to delve into another show or film to gain some insight into the characters, plot, and unique elements or themes. Then, it is time to see if it is a recommended show or movie and decide for yourself if it will deserve a spot on your watch list.
Today’s show is… The Walking Dead!
The Walking Dead follows the story of Rick Grimes after he wakes up from a coma to find the world forever changed, as the dead now roam searching for humans to eat. He reunites with people from his past and makes new friends and enemies along the way as not only are the dead a threat, but the living may be the biggest threat of all. Rick Grimes taps into his past career as a police officer to lead those around him. Often, the group of survivors cannot stay in one place for too long as trouble catches up to them eventually. This show is based on a comic book series by Robert Kirkman and there have even been video games based on the show such as the one created by Tell Tale.
Although the show draws upon ideas from the comics it also includes much original material to keep everyone invested into the progression of the show. The show includes elements of drama, and spine-chilling suspense, which keeps viewers hearts racing as people root for their favorite characters to survive. One strong point the show has is its ability to write compelling antagonists. The viewers see their reasoning and why they act a certain why, there can even be sympathy as we grieve for what they have experienced. Another strong points that not many shows can boast is its ability to maintain a strong story progression throughout the seasons. Viewers will like newer seasons just as much as older seasons, which is a problem with many shows as people become less interested as a show continues.
For people interested in special effects and stage makeup it is interesting to see the progression of how the show improved upon the zombie design. Even in the older seasons the zombies were an impressive show of makeup and wardrobe skills. The designers have talked about how this show is different from others, as usually zombies are shot in dark and gloomy settings, while in The Walking Dead they are often shown in hot and sunny settings. So, they had to show a boiled, leathery effect for the zombies. There was also visible effort put into the location setups, such as the worn-down buildings and Alexandria, the secure town. For this town the show makers transformed a real town
Overall, this show is another binge-worthy show that viewers will get drawn into as they root for their favorite characters and feel all the emotion and suspense the show has to offer. Although the show can be gory and graphic so it is not meant for those who are squeamish or not interested in zombie apocalypse based entertainment.
I’ve never watched walking dead but most of my friends have and they’re obsessed with it, I don’t really like zombies movies or shows so that’s why I’m not in a rush to watch it, but it sounds cool so i will definitely check it out sometime!
