RCL 4: My body, My choice…. Well Almost…

Is it mocking? Is it ironic? Is it stupidity? I am unsure what it is but in this vinyl bumper sticker it seems to be mocking the “my body my choice” argument made by pro-choice people through promoting anti-vaccine rhetoric.

The argument they seem to be making is that the government shouldn’t force people to take the vaccine. Taking the vaccine would affect their bodies, therefore it isn’t somebody else’s choice what they do to their body.

The sticker ignores the idea that the government wants you to get vaccinated that way we gain herd immunity, but let’s ignore the illogical assumptions and ideas brought to light in the sticker and focus on the argument!

The sticker utilizes the phrase “My body, My choice” which is a phrase that has been attributed to the pro-choice cause to battle the abortion ban.

This is implied knowledge that the buyer hopefully already knows.

I find it funny that the people using this sticker are using this phrase considering they are the same people that argue that abortion should be illegal.

This either means that they acknowledge that the opposing side is more empathetic, or they are unaware that they don’t heed their advice.

In regards to the empathy aspect, people who purchase this sticker may be trying to appeal to the pro-choice audience by saying that their anti-vaccine cause or purpose is similar to the government making rules about a woman’s reproductive rights.

If this is the case, they are attempting to build a bridge between these two communities to rally people behind the banner of anti-vaccine rhetoric.

If this isn’t the case and the people purchasing the vinyl decal are the same people making the argument that the government should be able to ban abortion, then this means that they are hypocrites.

You cannot use the slogan of the pro-choice movement for your cause if you previously had slandered it. You either believe the statement, or you don’t.

People place this sticker on their cars to ironically poke fun at the “My body My choice” slogan while promoting their uninformed rhetoric on vaccinations.

Either way, this bumper sticker would most definitely catch my eye if I were on the road. As for whether or not this silly bumper sticker would convince me that vaccinations are bad and a form of government control, I will most likely continue to believe the opposite.

  1. Hey, Noah. I think the phrase “My body, my choice” is logical reasoning for pro-abortion, but not for the anti-vaccine. This is because a woman’s termination of a pregnancy only affects her. Meanwhile, if someone refuses to get vaccinated and continues to spread the coronavirus, their choice is risking the health of others. At the surface level, this bumper sticker seems to use a logical argument, but once more thought is put into it, the logic fails, and the argument falls apart.

  2. Hello, the bumper sticker has an obvious audience, and it is obvious who they are selling to. The phrase they use(which is the pro-abortion slogan) is being used as a double edged sword in their case. They are obviously mocking the phrase by saying “If it is your choice what you do with your body, than it is also my choice what I put into my body”, but by doing this they give the people they are trying to mock(pro-abortion people) arguments merit.
