Thesis: As women become more empowered and the ideologies of women showing their bodies change, so does the fashion in the bathing suit industry.

Examples:

1. I would use outside source, called “Timeline of a Tan-line” which talks about crucial events that have shaped and changed the bathing suit fashion.

a. Fashion Magazines (https://www.1stdibs.com/blogs/the-study/history-of-swimwear/)

b. The reasons that they give for the sift is innovative shifts in fashion and entertainment. For example the rail travel ignited a new fashion of bathing in braces for entertainment, also, the creation of new fabrics and analysis on the female physic, which allowed for slimmer and sporty bathing suits, rather than “beach dresses” from the 1900s.

c. I agree with them because what once kept women hidden under loads of fabric has evolved and has allowed for the expression and apreciation of the female body to be something normal in today’s society.

i. I agree with the way specific events are related to a shift in the bathing suit fashion as well as a shift in ideologies and opinions of men on the female body and the way it should be exposed or in this case, not exposed.

d. These theories are helpful because it creates a clear timeline of how ideologies of the woman and the bathing suit fashion go hand in hand, and are correlated in so many ways.

2. Analysis

a. Here is where you use/analyze primary texts

i. Speeches

ii. https://www.townandcountrymag.com/style/fashion-trends/g10027633/12-iconic-swimsuit-moments-in-pop-culture/?slide=12 (where they highlight iconic and controversial bathing suits used by influential women throughout the years)

  1. The evolution seen through ads.

2. https://www.thewrap.com/most-memorable-swimsuits-tv-film-history-photos/ ( the most iconic bathing suits in tv shows, what was happening during the time they aired, and what was the reaction of the public.)

3. https://www.townandcountrymag.com/style/fashion-trends/g10027633/12-iconic-swimsuit-moments-in-pop-culture/?slide=12 (where they highlight iconic and controversial bathing suits used by influential women throughout the years)

iii. highbrow magazine articles (New Yorker, Harpers, Atlantic, etc.) How bathing suit style now varies by the choice of the woman and how it flatters her body rather than men setting a standard for them. ( SOURCE: VOGUE: https://www.vogue.com/article/best-bathing-suits-for-every-body-type)

3. Conclusions

a. The women bathing suit used to be influenced by men and how they influenced the fashion to accommodate to their ideologies of how women should  look and how modest they should be. Now, it is chosen by the woman, the one she wears is influenced by her personality, modesty, and body type rather than by ideologies, lack of innovation, and the closed minds of the men of the past.

b. Restating thesis:  As women become more empowered and the ideologies of women showing their bodies change, so does the fashion in the bathing suit industry.

c.  Why do we need to know this? We need to know this to see how far women have come, even if it something as simple as a piece of clothing, but it tells a story one that has to be praised given all the effort made by women throughout history to be and stand where we stand today.

Why is all this interesting? It is interesting because it shows that through an effort made by a group of people against ideologies and oppression from other larger groups things can be changes, yes after a long time, but still through united effort common goal can be met.
