Over the past few posts, within the passion thread specifically, I’ve discussed a couple of what could be considered “sub genres” of music or at least what Spotify would call them in their yearly wrapped. The day where every Spotify user posts to the general public about how many hours they spent listening to music and the amount of time they spent listening to their favorite artist(s). This last year Deftones was considered my “top artist”. And you may be wondering: why is Del bringing this up? Well I can answer that for you right now, in this post I’ll be discussing what I call “Del’s mind”, in other words the music that makes up who I am.
I’ve been listening to music daily since I was a baby, and you might say “hasn’t basically everyone done that? You’re not special” and I’m not saying I am. But what I do know is that it played a major role in my childhood. Growing up I learned how to play the piano and recorder (yikes) in elementary school, ukulele in middle, and I picked up the electric bass guitar my senior year. I’ll never forget the time I spent with my band, for my final two semesters of high school. Before we disbanded due to the fact our drummer and rhythm guitarist were both freshmen. And I continue to play in my free time here at Penn state.
Anyways, back to the main point of this post: discussing my taste in music. Over the years, like anyone else, my music shifted as I grew up. Going from Disney princesses and 80s bands that I listened to while my parents drove me to and from school, to what my friends describe as either “incredibly depressing” or the “best taste in music” (depending on who you ask).
Consisting of mostly: The Smiths, Deftones, Mazzy Star, Pixies, Tyler, The Creator, Tv Girl, Radiohead, Blur, Joy Division, The Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Slow Dive, The Cranberries, The Strokes, Car Seat Headrest, my bloody valentine, Weezer, Peach Pit, Laufey, Men I Trust, Beabadoobee, and Tippling Rock. In other words a very lovely mixed up jumble of everything. I can thank all the friends I’ve made over the years and my dad for introducing me to all these artists. It’s always funny playing my music when I’m in the car with my dad and he’ll turn to me and go “you listen to _____?” and then we get to talk about the artist, then its usually thrown in my face that he saw the artist/band before I was born. And as a result of this we’ve gone to more concerts in recent years together. Usually I’d go into depth with a couple of the artists listed, but a majority of them can be found within other posts and this weeks post was more of a “get to know Del” one.
