Euphoria: Unrealistically Realistic?

The hit HBO show Euphoria is a distinctive drama highlighting Generation Z characters navigate through the social media age. The show takes a daring stance on the current dilemmas of teenagers, focusing on the issues surrounding drug dependent teens. The show itself uses vivid colors, angles techniques, perceptions, and a compelling soundtrack to draw its viewers in.

While the show is not an exact representation of all aspects of life as a teenager it feels very relatable. The atmosphere and the anxiety teenagers feel is very similar, along with hiding important thoughts and experiences from family. In addition the focus on peer pressure is not too far off from the true reality of our generation (especially the party scene). The show focuses on how dark and complex teenage life can be these days in contrast to the other types of media exposure surrounding adolescence.

Society, especially teenagers nowadays look for instant solutions to dealing with such a fast paced era. Euphoria showcases this through usage of drugs. The main character Rue allows the audience just how much it can affect people of all ages as well. Her strained relationship with her family portrays the guilt both sides feel and just how hard it is to break away from addiction. The show often uses symbolic scenes and shots to showcase Rue’s alternate emotional reality that she is experiencing while she is intoxicated. Even to an audience that cannot personally relate to the struggles of addiction, it allows them to comprehend why so many addicts continue to abuse drugs.

The characters within Euphoria are very exaggerated forms towards the reality of the excitement/adrenaline Gen Z seeks through social media . All characters are seeking validation either from people or things throughout the show and is a recurring theme and catalyst for many of their actions. In this current society we have so much information online and readily accessible. Similar to the characters society as a whole all seeks validation from others, especially through the media. Growing up around so much content has vastly affected our generation and has changed many of our perceptions on how we view the world. Euphoria goes to deeper lengths to showcase the hidden insecurities of teenagers. The media creates a facade of the kind of life we should be living, so much that it overtakes every aspect of our behaviors and actions. While many of us want an exciting kind of life, many of us are afraid to put ourselves out there or make change.

Despite how realistic the show is, there are also many aspects that are unrealistic, from the wardrobe, the makeup, the aesthetic, and the overall look of the modern world. Teenagers don’t do makeup like that nor do they typically go to the extremes with their emotions like the show does. In the show theres a scene where a character Nate literally tries to kill a guy for being with his girlfriend. While the show is very unrealistic in many ways, emotionally it is so realistic for many causing many to be left with a strange emotions about the overall feel of the show.

Passions Proposal

Some passions of mine are listening to all genres of music and watching different shows & movies on television. I see both as a form of art and it is interesting to see how different forms of art can influence people in different ways. TV is impactful with powerful facial expressions and tone. Whereas music is impactful by having an artist sing in the right way to set a mood and evoke feelings in the listener that the singer is also feeling . Music and tv was a big thing in my life growing up as my family absolutely loved all forms of it. For my passion blog topic I would really like to review movies and tv shows. I tend to really enjoy evaluating someone that I’ve watched or trying to find deeper symbolism that I could not catch the first time I watched something. My other pitch would to explain the symbolism or story behind certain songs. Many artists have deep meanings in their lyrics that are often overlooked. This is especially true when they have a music video as well, good music videos  have symbolism that further convey the tone and story of a song that is vastly overlooked. Therefore for my blog I would like to write about either TV or music as they are minor yet impactful things that I partake in daily.

Athlete Commonplace in Advertisements

An overwhelming point within the culture of the American Dream is the idea of “work hard, play hard”. We are shown that the harder we put in work and effort, the more rewarding it is in the grand scheme of things. This belief is especially prevalent in the way athletics are advertised and idolized in the media. A classic example is the hit “Be Like MikeGatorade commercial in 1991. The advertisement aimed to make him endearing and down to earth as a professional athlete in order to encourage others to “Be Like Mike”. Michael Jordan was the biggest name is basketball at the time with several ads with big companies such as Nike and was well known for his reputation as a player and a person. The commercial showed several of his best game clips such as difficult layups and slam dunks in the NBA Finals. The commercial then cuts to a large group of children varying in age attempting to copy his signature moves and Michael Jordan playing with the kids. Throughout the video Michael Jordan is shown playing hard at basketball then cutting to clips of him laughing and smiling with a Gatorade bottle. The commercial appeals to people of all ages and of course the huge fan base that follows Michael Jordan and the basketball community. By using someone influential such as Michael Jordan it creates a level of credibility towards the ad and will cause others to indirectly feel closer to said athlete. The commercial makes the audience feel that if they also work just as hard as Jordan they will be able to enjoy the same feeling and luxuries as him. That is appealing to the audience and the commercial further goes to end with “Be like Mike. Drink Gatorade.” Using this strategy it causes the audience to directly idolize and associate Gatorade with Michael Jordan further associating the drink with working hard for the future like Jordan.
