The hit HBO show Euphoria is a distinctive drama highlighting Generation Z characters navigate through the social media age. The show takes a daring stance on the current dilemmas of teenagers, focusing on the issues surrounding drug dependent teens. The show itself uses vivid colors, angles techniques, perceptions, and a compelling soundtrack to draw its viewers in.
While the show is not an exact representation of all aspects of life as a teenager it feels very relatable. The atmosphere and the anxiety teenagers feel is very similar, along with hiding important thoughts and experiences from family. In addition the focus on peer pressure is not too far off from the true reality of our generation (especially the party scene). The show focuses on how dark and complex teenage life can be these days in contrast to the other types of media exposure surrounding adolescence.
Society, especially teenagers nowadays look for instant solutions to dealing with such a fast paced era. Euphoria showcases this through usage of drugs. The main character Rue allows the audience just how much it can affect people of all ages as well. Her strained relationship with her family portrays the guilt both sides feel and just how hard it is to break away from addiction. The show often uses symbolic scenes and shots to showcase Rue’s alternate emotional reality that she is experiencing while she is intoxicated. Even to an audience that cannot personally relate to the struggles of addiction, it allows them to comprehend why so many addicts continue to abuse drugs.
The characters within Euphoria are very exaggerated forms towards the reality of the excitement/adrenaline Gen Z seeks through social media . All characters are seeking validation either from people or things throughout the show and is a recurring theme and catalyst for many of their actions. In this current society we have so much information online and readily accessible. Similar to the characters society as a whole all seeks validation from others, especially through the media. Growing up around so much content has vastly affected our generation and has changed many of our perceptions on how we view the world. Euphoria goes to deeper lengths to showcase the hidden insecurities of teenagers. The media creates a facade of the kind of life we should be living, so much that it overtakes every aspect of our behaviors and actions. While many of us want an exciting kind of life, many of us are afraid to put ourselves out there or make change.
Despite how realistic the show is, there are also many aspects that are unrealistic, from the wardrobe, the makeup, the aesthetic, and the overall look of the modern world. Teenagers don’t do makeup like that nor do they typically go to the extremes with their emotions like the show does. In the show theres a scene where a character Nate literally tries to kill a guy for being with his girlfriend. While the show is very unrealistic in many ways, emotionally it is so realistic for many causing many to be left with a strange emotions about the overall feel of the show.
