(sorry the quality came out so low, I’m not sure what happened.)
I suppose the first thing I want to mention is that I find it really hard to address subjects with a general focus. I often try to go as deep as I can into any topic, sometimes more than necessary, and so I really tried to reverse that for the ted talk. Initially, I timed myself according to a very similar set of slides (I only deleted one) and my test run ended up being close to 15 minutes. So, I realized I’d have to glaze over some of the things that I had wanted to say, and keep it as quick and “shallow” as possible. Basically, a lot of editing had to happen for me to get into the proper time frame. With that being said, there are some things that I wanted to include because I felt like this is a topic that is important to know about. For one, though I see in review that I did not remove the NPR logo from my school image, I could not add that my high school;s heroin abuse was actually the focus of an NPR broadcast and article! I don’t know whether to be proud or ashamed, but I wanted to share because I only found out while doing research! Also, I didn’t really get to focus on any actual accounts or science behind how marijuana connects to cancer, but I recognize that that probably would have been overboard. In one way, I’m glad I chose an idea I care so much about, but on the other hand it ended up being a tad emotionally stressful and too easy to talk about science as a way to counteract that. I just really hope that regardless of the things I cut out of the talk, people still understood that legalizing marijuana could save lives, spare pain, and overall shouldn’t be ignored just because of stale prejudices.
