Idea Persuading and Advocating

For this project, I will be working with Barbara Vanbenthuysen.  We will be focusing on the topic area of the governmental decreasing its funds to NPR, PBS and public schools.  Instead, he is redirecting the funds to other areas such as private schools.  The first way that we will engage the audience will be reminding the audience of childhood memories.  Such memories could include listening to NPR, specifically when they were in the car and their parents and grandparents would always have it on in car rides.  Furthermore, many people will know of TV shows that were present on PBS that were the favorites of children, and taught them basic morals of right and wrong.  The main problem that we will be addressing is Trump defunding of NPR, PBS, and public schools.  There are multiple articles regarding how Trump is actually defunding these areas, and some of these include the following:

Trump’s Budget Plan Cuts Funding For Arts, Humanities And Public Media

is an article written by National Public Radio.  There are of course other articles that say

Five Reasons Trump Is Right to Cut NPR, PBS.

It is clear that there are varying opinions, and they will all be expressed equally.  All of this evidence will be used to help propose a solution for the problem.  One solution would start a petition.  This would hopefully gain the attention of politicians to act in the favor of the public, and the policy suggestions that we are writing about will hopefully create change.  The audience can engage easily by joining the petition and gaining the attention of other politicians to collect support for the cause.

“This I Believe” Rough Draft

It all happened so quickly, so unexpectedly.  I have always had an interest in medicine, especially emergency medicine.  Hearing distant sirens or even seeing ambulances always gave me a rush; a rush because someone was in danger, and those trained individuals in the ambulance were about to save a life.  When I received my CPR certification from high school health class, I knew that I could now make a difference in the actual lives of people in my community.

With this certification, I decided to apply to volunteer at my local ambulance squad.  I know I did not have all of the qualifications, seeing as I could only perform CPR and mild first aid; however, I felt that this could be my chance to get involved in the emergency field and shine.  After a month of an interview, drug test, background check, and a tour, I received the call and scheduled my time that I would volunteer.

My first day.  I was beyond excited, and honestly, somewhat surprised that I was where I was.  The tones dropped.  I looked around and watched my partners move to the ambulance, as I hop into the back.  When the tones dropped and the voice came over the loud speaker in the squad building, I was too excited to listen to what the dispatcher actually said.  I was essentially going into this call blind.

Zooming around with lights illuminating the surroundings and sirens blaring, the crew and I made our way to the scene.  I leaned forward and looked through the hole connecting the back box to the driver cabin, and looked out the windshield.  I was surprised to see too many police cars to count, and multiple fire trucks.  I was confused tremendously, but at the same time excited because this could be the first time I saved a life.

The ambulance quickly stops, and I exit the back like I was trained to, and took out the stretcher with the first-in bag and monitor on top.  The moment I turned around and looked where we were, I froze.  I never thought this would happen.  I thought I was ready to face any and all situations.  I froze.  There was a man lying on the grass next to a swing set, not moving, with a bullet wound.  One police officer came over to me and tried to bring me away from the scene because she knew it was my first day.  Next thing I knew, my partners were yelling to me to get the equipment and begin CPR, both tasks that I knew well and was trained for.  Everything changed from that point on.  No longer was I scared, or frozen; no.  Now, I was a man with a mission, knowing what my job in the world was.  This moment clarified everything I thought, and everything I believed.  From this point forward, I believed in actively helping others.

This I Believe, Passion Blog, and Civic Issues

For This I Believe essay and podcast, my first choice would be to write about helping others.  “I believe” in helping others.  As a young child, I was like every else playing outside having fun.  It was not really until 7th grade that I developed this belief and became very passionate about it.  I began volunteering at my ambulance squad where I would respond to 911 calls in my town.  This opened my eyes to the world, and helped me understand my place in my community.  Now an EMT, I want to dedicate my life to helping others because I believe in it more than anything.  The second choice is my belief in change.  People have the potential to change, but only if they want to.  My personal experience is when I attended college.  I knew that I wanted to change who I was, and I was willing to let the change happened and run its course.

For my passion blog, I would like to either continue my food blog, or talk about rare/obscure diseases and disorders.  My food blog talks about how different types of dishes became popular, and how I encountered them in my life.  If I were to talk about different diseases, then I would talk about the disease itself, the history of it, and its impact on society.

For my civic issues blog, I want to write about the environment, since I am most passionate about that out of all of the options.  My first choice would be to talk about fracking.  I have always been interested in fracking, and its impacts on society.  In previous years, I have done research on the subject, so this would only further my investigation on the topic.  My second choice is about water.  Water is obviously an important, required, aspect of life; however, many people in the world have extremely limited access to it.

TED Talk Outline

Topic: The shift in political campaign methods and how they impact voters’ opinions.

Purpose: To convince people to look more deeply into the candidate that they are voting for.  It is important to conduct your own research, and not just trust what is said in one particular source.

Thesis: Over the past few decades, the paradigm of political campaigns has shifted drastically from information and experience to anything remotely leadership related for the next leader of the United States of America.

AGD:I will begin by asking the audience a rhetorical question about watching the 2016 presidential debates.  I personally do not watch them to see who is running for president with the intent of learning more information; instead, I watch the debates for comedic relief of college.Image result for trump v clinton debate

The way that politics are changing, specifically with campaigns, is drastically affecting how people vote, and who they vote for.  At this point, I will approach my thesis that campaign strategies are shifting.  When did they start to shift? The JFK and Nixon debate.

Image result for jfk nixon debateNone of us actually saw this debate, we were not born yet.  But interestingly enough, we all learn about it in school at nauseum.  This debate, the first ever televised debate, marked the point at which people started paying attention to the aesthetics of the candidate, sometimes more than what the candidate was saying.  This idea has been taken to the extreme recently, and it needs to shift back to depending more on what people say.
Image result for obama social media campaignThe second wave of change for campaigns was Barack Obama, and how he used social media significantly more than any other candidate for president ever did.  This drew attention from the younger generation and helped him win the election.  These two examples show clear changes in campaign strategies.
I will close with a statement telling people to look deeply into who they are voting for.  If I gave the speech before election day, I would tell people to research more before they vote.  But since it will be the day after the election, I will talk about who won, and why they won in respects to campaign strategy.

Paradigm Shift

Ever since 1776 when the United States of America became a country, politics have been crucial in how the country is run.  In fact, before this time politics were still very important.  Something that was different about this country, however, were the campaigns.  In the beginning, people would commit to vote for a specific candidate because they believed they were the best person for the position.  Times have changed significantly, and campaigning has changed as well, perhaps for the worst.

One of the most important aspects that used to matter in deciding the next president of the United States was experience.  This upcoming election, between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, have proven otherwise.  Clinton, former Secretary of State, has impeccable experience.  Trump, on the other hand, has zero political experience whatsoever.  The important aspect has now become money, and if people can pay for their campaign.

Taking a step back, one of the most important aspects to current campaigns is no longer visiting places around the country, but instead posting things on social media.  These posts can be on Twitter, Facebook, and especially their private websites.  In fact, during the presidential debates, Clinton has a fact checker just to target Trump, which I find extremely comical.

It is becoming more apparent that politics are more about bringing down the opponent instead of bringing yourself up.  Commercials specifically targeting how terrible the opponent is has replaced the more appropriate “this is why you should elect me”.

Politics in general are changing, as we see currently with the first black president.  Now for this election, there will either be the first woman elected, or the first completely inexperienced political candidate (really a businessman) elected President of the United States.  There is no telling where the future of politics is headed, but at this rate, it will most definitely not be pretty.

Circle Post 5

The scene featuring the Mariana Trench organisms all joining together in one large tank was highly symbolic to the Circle, as well as society (471).  The whole purpose of combining the three organisms, the octopus, seahorses, and shark symbolized the parts of society rejoining together just like the organisms are joining together just like in their own natural habitat.  The vivid descriptions of the tank, however, began to foreshadow something peaceful.

After both the octopus and seahorses were placed into the tank, they began to easily acclimate themselves to the coral and seaweed environment.  Immediately before the shark was released into the tank, Eggers takes time to describe the serenity of the tank.  He calls it beautiful, as the seahorses drop like golden question marks; all of the imagery foreshadows peace (476).  It is not until the shark is placed into the tank that all of the peace is suddenly broken.  Furthermore, the peace is destroyed more than imagined.

When the shark is placed in the tank, it devours the tuna in only a few bites.  But of course the shark does not stop there.  The shark needs to keep eating because it keeps Circling.  The shark breaks the coral and devours the octopus quite destructively and gruesomely, and then goes after the seahorses.  At the end, the is nothing left in the tank except the dust on the ground created by the shark.

One of the main symbols that this whole event shows is how the tank situation is very similar to the Circle situation.  Placing all organisms in the same tank is strangely similar to Completion that the Circle is about to undergo.  This can almost be seen as a test run for Completion.  The fact that everything is destroyed frightens Ty significantly.  This is one of the reasons he goes against everything he once created and feels the need to destroy the Circle before Completion occurs.

He warns Mae that what she saw occur in the tank is what will be seen in society.  If everyone knows everything about everyone, DNA, health, mental state, more than the individual would know about themselves, there is nothing left.  People can be destroyed instantaneously (485).  After Completion, Ty believes that the Circle will be nothing less than a complete totalitarian regime that has control over everything.  We, the reader, know the suppression of this type of regime so we gain a sense of distaste in the Completion stage for the Circle.  We believe it must be stopped, Ty believes it must be stopped, but he needs Mae’s help to actually stop it.  It takes immense amounts of convincing to let Mae see the truth about the Circle, and what can really happen if Completion occurs.

Luckily, Mae does see what will happen, and claims that she will join sides with Ty to stop the Circle.  In fact, he wants to reverse the Circle’s progress since it is not what he ever wanted.

Circle Post 4

As The Circle is becoming more powerful as time progresses, and an example of this progression is seen with the shark.  The transparent shark symbolizes something that has the ability to destroy, even though it is transparent.  The shark is a symbol of fear, and now that it is transparent, it is even more frightening.  This is very similar to The Circle, and we see that Mae is beginning to become transparent, unleashing who she really is without knowing.

One of the drawbacks to being so heavily involved in The Circle is the lack of privacy.  Mae is constantly exploiting herself through her sexual actions, and when she does so, she reveals to everyone all aspects of her life, even the personal ones.  Therefore, she begins to have the appearance, or lack there of an appearance.  She is, in turn, becoming transparent just as The Circle is, and just as the shark symbolizes.

As time goes on, Mae becomes even more heavily integrated into The Circle.  She has moved past the point of return, abandoning in her family, and her old friends.  She has been extremely focused on improving her status in the business instead of keeping her status with her relationships.  As for her romantic relationships, that is an entirely different story.  She is becoming a part of Circle, so much that she has nothing else without it.  This is very dangerous because after The Circle essentially takes over the world, which is predicted, she will be high up in power.  But if it comes crashing down, she will have absolutely nothing left.

In order to better understand Mae’s transparency, we must first look at the Circle’s transparency.  To everyone inside and outside of the Circle, it seems as if there is nothing to hide.  All of the social media aspects, the games, the shows, everything is out in the open.  This would normally be good; however, when an organization has so much power, one must be careful not to trust it too much. Mae is slowly following this path.  She is gaining increasing power as she spends more and more time in The Circle, and is acting more transparent.  She seems to be hiding no secrets because she lets everything get uploaded.

All aspects of Mae’s life are on the internet, she has no secrets, and she is becoming more powerful.  She is, in a way, becoming the Circle.  She has now created a perpetual role for herself in the Circle and can do nothing about it.  This aspect of her life she has no control over anymore.  She only has power within the organization, now over herself.  This is almost like the Circle itself.  It is moving in such a way that cannot be stopped, but at the same time, the workers aren’t the ones pushing it.  It seems to move forward on its own and not have any control.  It will be interesting how the book finishes and shows whether or not Mae is stuck with the Circle forever.

The Circle, True Life vs Alternate Realities

When Mercer tells Mae that she has become boring, he is only saying that due to the change in her.  As time progresses, people always change.  However other’s interpretation is left to their discretion.  If we decide to believe that Mae has in fact become boring, there is a good reason for that.  Her life has changed significantly since she has been at the Circle.

Mae has trouble, like Mercer is saying, to distinguish between a real and simulated life.  There is absolutely a difference between the two because one you can escape, and the other you are stuck in.  Mae is slowly falling into her simulated life as she spends more time at the Circle; moreover, she has full control over it.  She is attempting to fall deeper into the culture and believe more into the simulated life.

This becomes clear not only when she stays up nights trying to improve her scores, but also her attempt to participate in any and all activities that improve her status.  When she is recorded participating in activities that she is ashamed of, it does not take long for her to move on from this embarrassment.

This idea of becoming more absorbed into a simulated world is becoming more realistic in our society today.  People are beginning to become so involved in the World Wide Web, that the sometimes forget who they really are.  People begin describing themselves on social media, and try to live up to their name – whatever that means.  There is nothing that people actually have to live up to, but they seem to fake who they are just to please others.  This is so easy because everything is on the internet.

As the world becomes more technologically advanced, this fake reality is becoming more active in society.  People often choose communication over the phone even when they are next to each other! They will actually text each other as they literally sit next to each other.  Furthermore, people choose text, Snapchat, Twitter, or Facebook over a real phone call.  This change in mode of communication enables people to not actually feel emotion.  It is difficult to feel emotion through a text, so people often do not feel the emotion as they write.  Luckily, not everyone is like this.

There are newer advancements such as Facetime and emoji’s that help people add feeling into what they are saying, when they are saying it.  Although Facetime is not as good as meeting someone in person, it is by far the closest out of all of the options.  I am interested to know where society is going with these advancements, but I have a feeling the Circle might hint at what happens if people start to believe that the false reality is true.  If people get too involved in the fake person, they might actually forget who they are, and not know how to actively communicate with others in real life.

Rhetorical Analysis Essay Rough Draft

The introduction will begin with a clever introduction of the light bulb.  Although most people in society today believe that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, there were countless other scientists that made significant advancements preceding Edison.  The earliest recorded discovery was in 1802 by Harvey Davy, when he discovered the electric light.  Just like the speech, I will lead in with a history of the bulb, except more in depth than the speech. It was not until 1879 that Thomas Edison enclosed a carbonized filament in a vacuum tube to create a long lasting luminescent object now known as the incandescent light bulb.   Since his discovery, advancements have been made and the lightbulb has taken on a whole new meaning.  Now, the light bulb stands for insight, curiosity, and most importantly, communication.  Although insight and curiosity arrive through the light bulb’s rhetoric ability, the communication aspect arises through physical involvement in cell phones.

At this point, I will explain my first paragraph on how the LCD screens became integrated into the cell phone, and what role they play in enabling communication world wide.  By explaining it this way, I hope to reveal my second artifact clearly as the cell phone, specifically smart phones.  This will aid in explaining how the light bulb and the phone aid in communication around the world, something I briefly spoke about in my speech.  The phone acts as a commonplace because it is the epitome of communication.  It also is tied to light bulbs because it relies on an LCD screen for communication through things such as facetime.

One way that the two artifacts are intertwined is through the internet.  Yes, the internet is more of an intangible artifact; however, the accessibility of this aspect of now daily life is what makes the difference.  The fact that we no longer rely on computers that occupy entire rooms means that the information of the world wide web is easily accessible to all.  Moreover, this information is accessible with the push of the finger on the screen of a smart phone.  The invention of LCD screens as well as smart phones enables us to pursue our curiosity and fulfil different levels of insight that we as a society desire.  Defined by Gary Klein during his TED Talk on Light Bulb Moment, insights are defined as unexpected discoveries about how things work and how to make them work better.  This is imperative to understand because life will not get better with just invention, nor just innovation.  Instead, the two must join together to constantly invent and improve products.  This civic aspect of the light bulb enables the civic aspect of phones.

Not only are the two artifacts connected, but they bring civic life and rhetoric together.  There are other avenues that can be explored like the environmental movement.  I could tie this into how phones and televisions, both forms of the lightbulb, enable mass communication and the spreading of the movement.  Any movement, in fact, can thank the light bulb because the whole purpose of a movement is to get the maximum number of people behind the cause.  The lightbulb, in all of its forms, makes this easily achievable.

Circle Blog Data and Privacy

Data is defined as facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.  Privacy is defined as the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people.  These two can work together in harmony; however, there is a fine line between collecting data and invading one’s privacy.

Mae explores this concept of data versus privacy in The Circle as she begins to join all of the social networking websites.  She does not fully comprehend what she is giving away; she essentially gives away every aspect of her life to the cloud.  When she finally understands that she gave every aspect of her life away, she regrets it and becomes angry.  She comes to this conclusion when Francis gives permission for Gus to look into her information.  To the men, there was no problem with this.  To Mae, however, this crossed a line and violated her privacy.

It seems that people are unable to avoid crossing the line of privacy, and only when they cross it can they find it.  This is not always good because once the information is obtained and possibly leaked, the negative possibilities are endless where the information can end up.  Mae did not think of the possible consequences that could arise if she included all of her information on social media.

This relates significantly to the situation in the United States.  Furthermore, this affects the world.  People are uploading information such as their name, age, and pictures of themselves all over the internet.  What some people do not realize is that once something is on the internet, it never leaves the internet regardless if you think you delete it.  There is so much data on the internet that some people are taking advantage of this.

One example is posting too much information on Facebook.  Some people post every possible detail of their lives on Facebook, such as where they are at all times.  Sometimes people purposefully search the internet for when people say that they are leaving the country for vacation, work, or any other reason.  Since some people put their addresses online, the people scoping the internet can then go into the house of the person out of the country and rob them.  This can be easily avoided if people stop posting all of their information; however, they do not believe there is a line between sharing data and giving up too much privacy.

It is clear that data and privacy are extremely closely related, and it is important to realize there must be a distinct separation created between them.  They must not run together, for if they do, there will be no privacy, and society will turn into The Circle where all information is on the internet.  Nobody wants all of their information known online.  Nobody wants someone else to know more about themselves than they do.
