Kaxom: Penn State’s First Queer Service Organization

Ok so a little bit of a switch up this week! I am going to be talking about a new organization I am a part of here at Penn State and how it relates to easily my most beloved passions, the most passionate passion I have.

KAXOM

I, along with 4 other Penn State students here at Penn State, University Park, have created a queer service organization called Kaxom! Although we were originally using the term Greek life, we got told we couldn’t which is a whole different, very annoying story that I will stray away from. Kaxom, pronounced chasm, is an organization that will take part in various philanthropic events. This organization is centered around queer and gender non-conforming individuals, as well as allies! I am the Social Media Director for the club and it has been amazing so far. If you or your someone you know would be interested, please tell them about us! The way this is basically functioning as PR for the club is hilarious. Anyways…. Follow us on Instagram! @psu.kaxom lol.

A PASSION WAITING TO BLOOM

Ok but this actually does fit in to thee idea of a passion of mine. When I was in high school, we repeatedly asked the administration if we could start some sort of Gay Straight Alliance Club, and we were repeatedly told no. We even attempted to market it as an inclusive club and they still said no. It was evil. I identify as queer and non-binary and all I wanted to do was have a club where I could enagage with people like me and do fun cool events around that. One of th biggest things I was looking forward to about leaving high school, and entering college, was the ability to no longer be surrounded by Catholicism. Like don’t get me wrong, religion does help apply meaning to life and gives people a moral code to follow, but the Church literally does not believe in homosexual relationships, it’s literally defined as a sin. And also don’t get me wrong, I tested that school’s patience so much it was hilarious how many queer people go there. So although I enjoyed high school, I was itching to get the eff out of there. As I was preparing to come to Penn State, I was already well educated on all the LGBTQIA+ opportunities here. However, I did not necessarily see a club that I was very eager to join. None stood out. Then I got an email about the possibility of a queer Greek life organization and it was love at first sight.

Since we just got started, we haven’t done much yet, but I am so very excited for this period of my life. I have always been very passionate and very vocal about my views on LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion in all areas of life. I now finally have a vessel through which I can actually practice this passion, with other like minded people, in a setting that supports us, and I could not be more ecstatic.

…fr tho you guys should join our club and tell ur queer friends 😉 <3

  1. It’s so awesome that you took the initiative to start a club you are passionate about that will provide an inclusive space for students while helping others through philanthropy! I hope at some point your organization is able to be classified as a Greek org (if that is still the direction you would like to go with it). I can’t wait to see all the great work Kaxom will do on campus!
