For this week’s Personal is Political, I am going to talk about the Women’s March Madness tournament. I’m not gonna lie, I am running out of ideas to do for this. Recently, all I’ve been thinking about is the star guard for Iowa’s women’s basketball team, Caitlin Clark.
As some of you may know, the month of March is all about college basketball. March is when both the men’s and women’s teams battle to win the biggest trophy in all of college basketball. March is known to be madness because there is often many upsets, where high ranking teams are beaten by underdogs in the tournament. Anything can happen, it’s awesome, well at least for people who don’t bet money on their brackets. All across the country and world, people create their brackets for who they think will win, and every year, very few have perfect brackets. I did not make a bracket this year because, frankly, it makes me wayyyy too anxious lol.
This year though, March has been different. In years past, it’s been allllll about the men. The women’s tournament didn’t even get to be called “March Madness” until a couple of years ago. But oh how the tables have completely turned. And that is thanks to some incredible women leading college basketball in this era. Names like Caitlin Clark of Iowa; Angel Reese, Flau’jae Johnson, and Hailey Van Lith of LSU; Paige Bueckers of UCONN; freshman star Juju Watkins from SC. It is truly an amazing time to be a fan of women’s basketball.
These awesome women have garnered so much attention and recognition to the sport, so much so that the women’s tournament has averaged more than the men’s. Crowds for women’s games have also been more than the men’s. Women are finally beginning to get the recognition and equality they deserve in sports, and I could not be more happy. It is due time.
The end of the tournament is approaching, and I highly encourage you all to watch some of the games. The teams that are currently left are: Iowa, USC, UCONN, and NC. These final four teams are going to provide such great games, and I cannot wait to see who will win. I ultimately have no preference (although I am a huge fan of Caitlin Clark and want the Hawkeyes to finally win this year.) Women’s college basketball is pushing for more female equality in this country, and it’s fricken awesome.
Caitlin Clark is such a baller; it’s really fun to watch her play! In general, women’s sports have done a lot to push for more gender equality. Another great example is the women’s national soccer team, which has won the world cup four times! As someone who played basketball in high school, I am so happy to finally see these women get their due credit. Also, I did make a bracket this year, and it is NOT going well LOL.
I must admit that I rarely pay attention to March Madness or sports in general and have always been pretty out of the loop but this was really fun to read about! It’s amazing that women are getting more recognition this year as it is definitely well deserved. Although I barely understand the basics of basketball I will enjoy watching all of my friends freak out about it lol!
