Better to Be the One Who Smiled

It’s really easy to get caught up in your own life.  Between the school work, the extracurriculars, friends, and a social life, each of us has a lot on our plates. Every person has their own problems, and a lot of the time we like to think that that’s the only thing going on in the world. But, that’s not the case. Everyone has something to deal with, and each person struggles just as much with life as the next.  It’s important to remember that when you’re walking around campus, sitting in a  lecture, or even walking down the stairs in your building. Everyone has something going on that you don’t know about, and while you may not be able to help them solve all of their problems, you can definitely smile.

I absolutely love this quote because it is so simple, yet so powerful.  Just like a smile.  A smile is one of the simplest acts of compassion there is, but it has the power to brighten someones day even if its just in the slightest bit.  And vice versa.  If you’re having one of the worst days, or even weeks, how uplifting is it to receive a genuine smile from a complete stranger?  They don’t know you, what’s going on in your life, or anything about you at all, but despite all that they still chose to smile at you in hopes to spread a little happiness. So, smile back, because it is just as important to be the one who smiles back as it is to be the one who smiles. I believe a smile is one of the most genuine and valuable things you can give, because you truly never know what someone is going through. So next time you’re having a bad day, or a good day, or an average day, smile. Because, I don’t know about you, but I would much rather be the one who smiled than the one who didn’t smile back.

When I walk to classes, I usually try to make eye contact with people and smile at them, just to see what they do. I always hope for a smile back, but a lot of times people just look down, or away, or don’t even look where they’re going with their heads shoved in their phone screens. But it is always a treat when that one person does smile back and makes it worth while.

A simple smile has the power to turn my whole day around! I love just walking around campus and receiving a random smile because after that, I will be smiling my whole walk to class. It’s a simple gesture, but it speaks words. Great post 🙂

I like this post especially since in the middle of winter on a windy cold campus like this, we see so many dreary faces around campus. Missing the smiles all around campus in the warmer parts of the year definitely makes a bigger difference than most think.

  4. I love this post, Shannon! I think smiles are so powerful and meaningful. I love to smile myself. I always think that if someone is having a bad day, maybe someone that smiles or waves to them can make their day just a little bit better. Smiling is just such a simple gesture that can go a long way.

Great post! I definitely agree that smiles are very powerful. Whenever I make eye contact with someone I don’t know, I smile in a friendly way. Sometimes they smile back, and it’s nice…other times they just ignore my smile, which is a little disheartening. Smiling at someone is such an easy thing to do, so why not?

I agree that smiles are really powerful. Whenever I am sad and someone smiles at me, I definitely feel a little bit better. It is so easy to smile but really powerful, and your post really captured that idea.
