This has been an interesting and at times, tumultuous few months for Ariana Grande. Frankly, the singers’ entire career has been riddled with criticism, donut- licking scandals, and other questionable behavior. In fact, for years Ariana has been widely talked about for something as minor as a fight with a co-star, to something as extreme as the Manchester bombing at her concert, where several were killed, maimed, and injured.
In the past few months, Ariana has been a headline or at least viral almost weekly. As most know, Grande broke up with her late ex-boyfriend, Pittsburgh raised rapper Mac-Miller early last year. She quickly entered into a relationship with SNL star, Pete Davidson. Not only did their relationship come out of next to nowhere, but around the same time it came out that they were dating, it also came out that they were engaged! Fans were shocked at how quickly both Ariana and Pete exited their previous relationships to not only date one another but to get married. Every move the couple mad was analyzed. Mac Miller, who was known to struggle with drugs was also under the microscope, as fans wondered what his life would look as his ex-girlfriend got ready to marry another man after such a short time. Fast forward several months to September of 2018, and infamous rapper Mac Miller is dead. Days later, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson are no longer a couple. This was all the internet could talk about. The loss of Mac Miller, who created songs that inspired many was an impact felt by many. Ariana didn’t take much time before returning to social media to discuss her feelings. Although people took it as far to even blame her, Ariana didn’t succumb to the circumstances. The following weeks led to cryptic tweets from both Ariana and Pete. Ariana teased new music, while Pete threatened suicide. Ultimately her grief resulted in many new songs that show her as a strong woman who is overcoming the pain. Once again, however, she’s in the headlines not just because this week she released a new album, but because one of the names of her songs ” breaks up with your girlfriend, I’m bored”, is less than tasteful. At this point, people are even calling to boycott her album. In conclusion, Ariana Grande isn’t someone who will ever fly under the rade, it’s always something! It’s empowering to see how she’s risen from the pain, but will Ariana continue to win favor or anger?
I think that songwriters can have very impactful songs come out of hardships. I think that it’s positive to use struggles to better oneself, and putting that into music can help other people too. I like Ariana’s Song “Thank You, Next” (even though it’s silly) because it took some hard times that she went through with relationships and shows how she can learn from them and improve.
