Civic issues blog- Beto and Biden!

Two new bid’s have appeared on the presidential run radar this week. Texas’s Beto O’ Rouke, and former Vice President Joe Biden. So, who are these two big runners, and how would they benefit America?

“Robert Francis O’Rourke was born on September 26, 1972, at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, Texas, to Pat Francis O’Rourke and his second wife Melissa Martha O’Rourke (née Williams).[2][3][4][5]He has Irish and Welsh[6] ancestry.[7][8][9][10] His family gave him the nickname in infancy “Beto”, a common Spanish nickname for first names ending in “-berto”, initially to distinguish him from his namesake grandfather.[5][11]

His mother owned a furniture store, and is the stepdaughter of Fred Korth, Secretary of the Navy under President John F. Kennedy.[12][13][14] His father, Pat O’Rourke, served in El Paso as County Commissioner and County Judge.[a][15] Pat O’Rourke was an associate of Texas Governor Mark White,[16] and served as the state chairman of Jesse Jackson’s 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns,[17] before switching parties in the early 1990s and running several unsuccessful bids for office as a Republican.”

So that’s who he is. Beto, more recently, has sought a seat in the house of reps, and in the Senate. He barely won his seat in the House but did indeed after a pretty impressive campaign trail. Beto is said to have knocked on thousands upon thousands of doors in order to gain trust, win approval and ultimately win his spot. And he did just that! He is very well liked by the Latino community, and in Texas, where they make up a lot of the population, it really helped his run. He speaks against the inhumane treatment of immigrants at the border, so he clearly has his heart out for the Latino community. In 2014, he won his seat in the House, yet again, proving his popularity was increasing. The year of the presidential elections, he got his name out again by endorsing and supporting Hillary Clinton. Beto wanted bigger and better and was noted to be consulting with campaign managers and other wise-counsel, and by 2018, the semi-young, attractive, Beto was everywhere. He was running against Senate incumbent Ted Cruz. Social media was drawn to his charm, and people everywhere were urging young Texans to vote for him.

Here’s a list of some issues O’Rouke stands up for

  1. Gun Control
  2. Immigration
  3. Women’s rights
  4. Criminal justice

Joe Biden

“Joe Biden, byname of Joseph Robinette Biden, (born November 20, 1942, Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.), 47th vice president of the United States (2009–17) in the Democratic administration of Pres. Barack Obama.

Biden, who was raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County, Delaware, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1965 and a law degree from Syracuse University in New York in 1968. During this time he married (1966) Neilia Hunter, and the couple later had three children.”

Biden, and former president of the United States, Barack Obama.

Joe Biden is infamous for being the Vice President of the United States. Ever since Barack Obama left office, and was replaced by a not- so – popular president, Biden has been nothing short of begged by people to run in 2020, and now, that’s a reality. Biden is not just known for his adorable friendship with Obama, but for having a Pro Choice, as well as getting rid of the school to prison pipeline. Biden is also against the criminalization and dehumanization of minorities. This involves in lessening the sentences of simple drug charges. Biden recognizes the issue of an ever changing- dangerous climate and wants to address the role the United States can play in helping to “save the earth!”

Biden, also like Beto, is for gun control, in a country where mass shootings are a horrific issue.

Lastly, Biden is very open about supporting the LGBTQ community as well as supporting relgious rights.

I truly believe that both would be great Presidents. Biden has so much experience, and is already a favorite because he brings major Obama- era vibes. However, Beto is a fresh face with policiies that will help benefit immigrants in a world where there is so much scary anti-immigration and nationlistic ideals.

  1. I have not read a lot about Beto, so I appreciate you summarizing his main issues and his past work. I think his pro-immigrants stance will be very important in the election, given Trump’s anti-immigration stance. I definitely think that will help him get the vote from people who are fed-up with Trump’s wall.

I think that Biden is really popular among young people especially. A lot of young people are voting Democratic now, and I could easily see him winning their vote.

I thought that it was really interesting to look at their key issues. In my civic issues blog I talked about the values of different parties and how Democrats tend to weigh their “care” value more than anything else. That is apparent in the issues! Immigration and women’s rights are definitely things that value caring for people, especially the minorities or oppressed. Dehumanization of minorities and criminals is another issue about caring for everyone.

  2. I was not very informed of what O’Rouke stands for and it was very interesting reading about his journey in congress starting with narrowly winning a seat in the House of Representatives to receiving support from Hillary Clinton.

Joe Biden is a familiar face to the public and his performance in office will help with gaining public support in his campaign.
