What Is Religious Studies?
Religious Studies at Penn State prepares students to be global citizens by understanding, appreciating, and engaging a rich variety of religious traditions in different cultural contexts and historical periods. The study of religion is inherently interdisciplinary and comparative, and it draws on historical, sociological, literary, and philosophical approaches, among others. It offers a dynamic vantage point to appreciate human diversity, including political and ethical beliefs.
Critical thinking, writing, and in-depth analysis of texts are some of the essential skills that students will develop through the study of religion. A minor in Religious Studies is a solid foundation for professional careers where these skills are essential, including law, public service, and education. It is also a great addition to any major that engages a broad spectrum of human practices and beliefs, such as business, human resources, and healthcare.

Diversity Statement
Religious Studies is a community of faculty and students who represent a variety of backgrounds and a wide range of specializations, and who together explore the full range of the human religious experience in all its diversity. We welcome students who are curious about their own backgrounds, traditions, and worldview and who are ready to ask respectful questions of others about theirs. We strive to foster a culture of inclusivity and compassion, with the understanding that mutual respect and civility undergird all dialogue.
Staying Connected
Students, staff, and faculty at Penn State always strive to be connected to larger, global events. In a Flash Talk presented by the Society for the Study of Religion, Dr. Cathy Wanner discussed the Securitization of Religion in Ukraine, just days before the Russian invasion. This presentation provides an overview to hybrid warfare, and explains the role of religion in this unprovoked conflict.
