Upcoming CSED Events!
September 27 – “Monks, Nuns & Manuscripts: Crossing the English Channel in the Middle Ages”
The Penn State Society for the Study of Religion is hosting its first Fall seminar on Wed., Sept. 27, from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in 102 Weaver. Dr. Kathryn Salzer will present “Monks, Nuns & Manuscripts: Crossing the English Channel in the Middle Ages”
All are welcome and refreshments will be served! The Zoom link is available upon request (please email tuh14@psu.edu).
Description:
Historical studies of twelfth- and early thirteenth-century France and England often focus on the developments of, and interactions among, the Capetian and Angevin royal houses. Given the strengths of these royal houses at this time, as well as their participation in crusading efforts and their mutual struggles in regions like Normandy and Flanders, there clearly remains considerable history to examine. Yet, the trans-channel connections between France and England were much broader and deeper than those reflected in the royal houses, their armies, and the political dilemma that was Normandy. Monastic houses, especially those belonging to larger religious orders, had frequent and often continuous contact with each other across the region of Northern France and England.

Yakshahejje School of Yakshagana and Performing Arts USA was initiated by Dr. Rajendra Kedlaya, through support from the local community and admirers of Yakshagana to promote Yakshagana in the USA by conducting regular classes and now even online classes on Zoom. Dr. Rajendra Kedlaya is a researcher by profession and has learned Yakshagana under the tutelage of Guru B. Sanjeeva Suvarna of Yakshagana Kendra Udupi, Karnataka. He has won a number of awards and has a number of national and international performances to his credit. Hampi Festival in Karnataka, Festivals of Asian performing arts in Singapore, Woodford folk festival in Brisbane Australia, AKKA 2006 in Baltimore USA, and Asian Festival 2012 in Columbus Ohio USA are a few to mention. His programs are also televised in both Delhi and Bangalore Doordarshan in India. Rajendra was also very fortunate to be a part of much experimentation in Yakshagana and played leading roles in Yakshagana Ballets such as Hamsa Damayanthi, Chitrangade, Shabari, Ahalye, etc. directed by Professor Udayavara Madhava Acharya and was well appreciated by all Yakshagana critics. One and half hours one-man ballet “Panchali” depicting the story of Mahabharata performed by Rajendra is considered one of its kind in Yakshagana.
